A home-improvement/big-box store is still in the works for Athens’ Far East Side despite after more than a year of planning, property acquisition, and attainment of city and state approvals.
Menards spokesperson Jeff Abbott told The NEWS recently that it’s not clear yet when construction will get under way, however.
“We hope to build a new store in Athens at some point in the future, although no official timeline has been established just yet as to when we might begin construction,” Abbott said.
The Athens Messenger reported in December that it seemed like the construction of the Menards – to be located on the far east end of East State Street, across from the entrance to Hope Drive – was not going to happen in calendar year 2018, according to city officials.
Menards’ parent company already has received various approvals from the city of Athens to build the project, which could bring upward of 100 jobs to Athens once the store is operational. The company already has bought a significant amount of land off East State Street for the store.
