Correction: We previously identified this article's subject as being from Nelsonville because of court records listing his address as such. He was actually living in Glouster at the time of his arrest, county Prosecutor Elizabeth Pepper said Tuesday.

A Glouster man was convicted of multiple counts of rape in Athens County Common Pleas Court Friday, and consequently sentenced to nine years in prison.

Brandon Humphrey, 18, pleaded guilty Friday to four first-degree felony counts of rape, one third-degree felony count of sexual battery, and three fourth-degree felony counts of gross sexual imposition (non-consensual sexual touching). He also will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn said in a news release issued Saturday morning that a total of six “brave women” came forward in this case. Humphrey was indicted on two separate occasions recently, once in November 2018 and again in April 2019 – for sexually assaulting a total of six girls who were all under the age of 18 at the time of assault (their ages ranged from ages 14 to 17 at the time of the assaults).

“I am grateful to the dedicated service that (assistant county prosecutors) Elizabeth Pepper and Glenn Jones have put into improving the quality of investigations and prosecutions of sexual-assault cases for our community,” Blackburn said in the release. “There are many dedicated professionals in Athens County who worked to bring justice to these six survivors. I am humbled by the courage of these six women to speak out against Humphrey and the crimes that were committed against them.”

The NEWS previously reported that Humphrey was indicted last year by an Athens County grand jury in the county Common Pleas Court for sexually assaulting two juvenile female victims when he was 18. He was indicted again in April 2019 by another Athens County grand jury after having a new case bound over to Athens County Common Pleas Court after he was charged in county Juvenile Court with multiple counts of sexual assault that occurred when he was younger than 18.

In total, Humphrey was charged with five first-degree felony counts of rape and three fourth-degree felony counts of gross sexual imposition in the 2019 case. He already was facing the following charges from the 2018 indictment: a first-degree felony charge of rape; a third-degree felony count of sexual battery; a fourth-degree felony count of gross sexual imposition; and a first-degree misdemeanor count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

He pleaded guilty to all of those charges before Athens County Common Pleas Judge George McCarthy on Friday, but for the purposes of sentencing, the 2018 charges were merged into the single count of sexual battery, with the misdemeanor charge required to be run concurrently with that charge, for a total of five years in prison on that charge. Meanwhile, he was sentenced on all but one of the rape charges in the 2019 case (which was merged with the others for the purposes of sentencing), for a total of three years in prison on those charges, along with a one-year sentence for the gross sexual impositions. That information was provided by Assistant County Prosecutor Pepper on Monday.

Pepper said Monday that most of the victims were present in the courtroom Friday.

“They were relieved that the case had come to an end, and they were all able to give victim statements; either they gave them themselves or I read them out into the court,” Pepper said.
