Hell Betties

Athens’ “premiere roller-derby league” will roll out its season opener here at home this Saturday, according to a news release.

Spectators to the first home game of the year will see “a fierce battle on the track” as the Appalachian Hell Betties take on Gem City’s Violet Femmes from Dayton, Ohio, the release said. This is a double-header with the main event followed by an exhibition scrimmage.

“This is a family-friendly event,” Caitlin Garrity (aka Scary Gherry), Athens Ohio Roller Derby League board president, said in the release. “And we’re proud to share a portion of the game’s proceeds with Rural Action, a group that is as dedicated to promoting social, economic and environmental justice as we are about cultivating connections with the community and providing athletic opportunities.”

Those who are passionate about roller derby and those who wonder what the excitement is all about can check out the action at the Ohio University Indoor Tennis Facility, next to the Ping Center, on Saturday. Doors open at 4 p.m.; the action starts at 5 p.m.

“Roller derby is one of the most exciting, fast-paced sports out there. We look forward to bringing a hard-hitting, action-packed bout to the rink,” Garrity said in the release.

Food, beer and vendors will be available at the game. There will also be a halftime show. Presale tickets are $10 or $12 at the door. Ohio University students showing their ID are $10, and children under 10 are free. Tickets can be purchased at Brown Paper Tickets (aordspringfling.brownpapertickets.com) or visit the Athens Ohio Roller Derby website at www.aord.org.
