When there's a fire alarm sounding, take it seriously, and call 911

There are many different types of fire alarms. They range from smoke detectors to systems that control such things as sprinkler systems and elevators. Some fire alarm systems automatically notify the fire department when activated, but many do not. If you live in an apartment building or dorm, don't assume that the fire department has been called if the alarm is sounding. Call 911 to report the alarm and give any information you may have. Sometimes people ask why it took so long for the fire department to arrive. It's because no one called sooner.

Residential smoke detectors do a good job of alerting occupants, but if no one is home or close by, the signal goes unheard. Alarm systems such as those installed by Brinks or ADT are monitored by the alarm company so if you are not home, they will contact the fire department or police as needed. You may also get a discount on your homeowner's insurance for having this type of alarm.

Commercial buildings can have many different types of systems, depending on the size of the building, when it was built, and for what it is used. When it comes to elevators, not all operate the same way when there is a fire. Some alarms stop the elevator on the ground floor, but whether the elevator works or not, you should use the stairs. The power could go off and you would be trapped in the elevator in a building that was on fire.

When a fire alarm sounds, how do you know if it is a fire or just a false alarm? You can't know for sure unless you have checked the entire building. Call the fire department from outside the building and don't assume it's a false alarm.
