Ohio EPA grants upgrades to septic systems
May 2, 2005
The Sunday Creek Watershed Group (SCWG) held an informational session April 27 on the Septic System Upgrade Cost-Share Program currently being offered through an Ohio EPA 319 grant.
The Cost-Share Program is a voluntary program through which homeowners are eligible to receive reimbursement for up to 75 percent of the total cost to install or upgrade an on-lot, non-discharging septic system on their property. Currently, residents are only eligible if they reside in the critical parts of the Sunday Creek and certain tributaries within the watershed in or near Oakdale, Hollister, Congress Run, Greens Run, Millfield and Redtown. In these areas, fecal coliform levels (sewage pollution) far exceed the state's limit, a press release said.
Bill Carroll was the first resident to complete the septic upgrade and receive his reimbursement check. The maximum amount that the program can reimburse per site is $4,500. This includes any ACHD fees for the pre- and post site inspections, all necessary permits, and the total cost of the on-lot septic system.
Four individuals already have successfully installed or repaired septic systems and passed the final inspection given by the Athens City-County Health Department (ACHD).
"This is a great way for the homeowners to fix up their property, save money, and help out the environment," Cara Hardesty, the Sunday Creek Watershed coordinator, said in the press release. "Combined, residents have saved $13,544. That's an average of $3,386 per household."
Applications can be picked up at the SCWG office (69 High St. in Glouster), the ACHD office (278 W. Union St. in Athens) or online at www.sundaycreek.org.
Everyone interested is encouraged to apply. For more information, contact Dyana Fiediga at the SCWG office at (740) 767-2225 or dyana@sundaycreek.org, or the ACHD office at 592-4431.
