Cornwell Center in development

Cornwell Center in development

August 1, 2005

Development of the Cornwell Center for Cardiovascular and Diabetes Care is underway. The project includes major renovation as well as construction of a 5,000-square-foot addition to O'Bleness' former medical office building attached to the hospital.

Renovation and construction will provide 15,500 square feet of space in the new center on the first floor of the hospital. Renovation began in May 2005, and construction preparation for the foundation of the addition began last month.

The center will combine a variety of diagnostic and treatment procedures as well as education for patients with cardiovascular conditions and/or diabetes, conditions that are often related. The center facility will feature a low-risk catheterization laboratory for cardiac and vascular procedures -- not previously available in the area - as well as physician offices for cardiology and endocrinology.

Other services will include O'Bleness' HeartWorks cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program in conjunction with WellWorks at Ohio University, cardiovascular testing, and diabetes care and education.

The center is named the Cornwell Center for Cardiovascular and Diabetes Care in honor of Foster B. and Helen W. Cornwell, long-time Athens residents. The project is partially funded by a bequest from the late Foster B. and Helen W. Cornwell estate.

The completion is expected by mid 2006.
