Search Help
To search for stories, type in the words you are looking for into the search form. By default, the search will return a list of stories that contain at least one of the words you entered, ordered by relevance. The more closely your search matches the content of a story, the higher up it will show up in the results.
The following search phrase will find all the stories that have either the word 'police' or the word 'chief' in them.
police chief
This search phrase will find all the stories that have both the word 'police' and the word 'chief' in them.
+police +chief
You can do more complicated searches as well. Let's say you want to find all stories that contain the word 'police'. The stories may or may not contain the word 'chief', but if they do, the stories with both the word 'police' and 'chief' will be ranked higher in the results.
+police chief
If you only want to find stories that do not use the word 'chief', but that do use the word 'police', you can use the '-' operator before the word you do not want in the story.
+police -chief
To find stories that contain words that start with 'pol', such as 'policeman' or 'politician', use the '*' operator.
pol*
If you want to find stories that contain the phrase 'police chief', then enclose the phrase in double quotes.
"police chief"
You can group terms together using parentheses. To search for stories that include the word 'mayor' and either the word 'police' or 'chief', you would do the following:
+mayor +(police chief)
The search also ignores some common words, like 'the' and 'and'. It also ignores words that are three letters or less.
