The View From Mudsock Heights: There goes the sun, there goes the sun; it’s all right

Little darlin’, it’s gonna be a long, cold, lonely winter.>>

Letter: Ohioans have good selections for state Supreme Court: Russo, Sikora
November 3, 2008
I wanted to write to be sure Democrats know what great candidates we have for Ohio Supreme Court. Judge Joseph Russo is a common pleas court judge of many years. Judge Peter Sikora is a juvenile court judge who himself has faced personal struggle. Judge Sikora has been paralyzed from the shoulders down since he was a young man but had the perseverance to go to college, law school and serve as a judge.>>

Letter: Pat Kelly has helped his church in its good works over the years
November 3, 2008
I am writing this letter to voice my support for Pat Kelly for Athens County sheriff.>>

Letter: Phillips is the best candidate for people in the area and OU students
November 3, 2008
Debbie Phillips is far and away the best candidate to be the state representative for this area. Debbie’s background in education advocacy gives her the knowledge and qualifications necessary to hit the ground running as a strong voice in the Legislature capable of getting things done for us. She also has legislative experience, serving as a strong voice on Athens City Council with a 97 percent attendance record.>>

Letter: Why isn’t public allowed to speak at WOUB public advisory board sessions?
November 3, 2008
WOUB had a public advisory board, which meets periodically. I attended their board meeting Oct. 28 where I learned that the agenda is closed and the public is not allowed to speak. I was not able to attend the previous meeting, but was told by someone who did attend that the public was not allowed to speak at that meeting also. This seems more like a private organization than one that is open to the public.>>

Letter: In terms of the enviroment, Obama vastly superior to McCain
November 3, 2008
Here in battleground Ohio, it is important to know that Sen. McCain’s record on protecting our life-sustaining ecosystems is much worse than that projected to the public. Statements of “concern” regarding climate change are severely contradicted by his voting record.>>

Letter: Obama campaign still looking for volunteers on Election Day
November 3, 2008
On the evening of the presidential election in 2000, I was sitting in Casa Nueva watching the presidential returns with a large group of Democrats. When I left the Casa, it looked as if former Sen. Al Gore would be our next president. I went to bed around 12:30 a.m. with the radio alarm set to go off at 4 a.m. I woke up to the song “The Yellow Rose of Texas” blaring from the radio, I knew it had to be a nightmare. The nightmare has lasted eight long years!>>

Letter: Palin should put her money where her mouth is on abortion
November 3, 2008
I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian family but thankfully, I evolved. I know, firsthand, what Christians believe to be the role of women in the home and society: stay home, have and raise children, and be subject to the authority of their husbands (even if they want Alaska to secede from the union).>>

Letter: It’s our duty to know the ugly truths about potential president
November 3, 2008
Evidence against Obama continues to mount. ACORN, Ayers, Wright, Rezko, Khalidi. These are his alliances spanning two decades, linked in a panoply of criminality and hatred for America.>>

Letter: Here’s the way one 17-year-old views Election 2008
November 3, 2008
In these final months of ’08, I have had little to be proud of our leaders. The people elected by the generations before me have misguided my country into a devastating war and numerous sex scandals. I have inherited a system where a president can pardon his crooks. I have witnessed my fellow peers drop out of the classroom and a government that bails out the rich when the American people are desperate for help. We are truly at a historic, and sometimes dark cross-roads, and yet, all I can see is a campaign that works best when tearing everyone down. This is America and we deserve better.>>

Letter: If Gore had been elected in ’00, many things would be different
November 3, 2008
I appreciate Eric Miller for taking the time to respond to my recent letter (in the Oct. 30 Athens NEWS). He said that he was confused by my logic in suggesting we vote for Barack Obama, even though government may not bring us some of the reforms we would like. I will try to be clear.>>

Letter: Kelly will provide deputies with competent leadership they need
November 3, 2008
I am writing to express my support for Pat Kelly as the next sheriff of Athens County. Though much maligned in the editorial columns in the local media, Pat has maintained a positive message of how he will work to improve both the image and performance of the Athens County Sheriff’s Office.>>

Letter: Helping workers is justice, not socialism; remember that Nov. 4
November 3, 2008
I grew up in Athens County and lived there for 27 years. I know the hardship that faces many rural Ohioans; it is one that predates the current economic crisis and one that will probably outlive it. I know what it is like to struggle for a paycheck and feel like it is never enough. Many Ohioans are in this boat with me.>>

Letter: Government shouldn’t be asked to do good works we should do
November 3, 2008
The Reverend Todd Dunbebin’s mother insisted on living solely on her Social Security, Medicaid and food stamps (Oct 20). The minister no doubt knew that Timothy teaches that a widow’s children should help her, and that one who does not provide for his own is “worse than an infidel.” But Mrs. Dunbebin wouldn’t allow her children to help, choosing instead to let other people’s children support her by their taxes, filtered through a bloated government.>>

Letter: Area near proposed casino wants the associated jobs badly
November 3, 2008
I was a bit disappointed to read that The Athens NEWS is opposed to Issue 6 (the Casino amendment). I am not a gambler. I have been to an Indiana casino one time, to see Grand Funk Railroad and blow my $20 gambling limit. It was fun, but I’m a tightwad and hate to spend money that way.>>

Letter: Support ‘good Democrat’ Bill Moore for Ohio School Board
November 3, 2008
I am writing to ask people to support William Moore for Ohio School Board. I have known Bill for over 15 years, and he will make a great school board member.>>

Letter: Preventing charter issue from appearing on ballot is wrong
November 3, 2008
This is to explain why the option to abolish the charter form of government in Nelsonville was prohibited from being on the ballot. Garry Hunter, the Nelsonville city solicitor, made one phone call to the Athens County prosecutor and objected. There was no official filing.>>

Letter: Statistics prove that ’04 election was stolen in Florida
November 3, 2008
There is statistical proof that the 2004 Florida election was stolen.>>

Letter: Kelly will make Athens County proud of his service as sheriff
November 3, 2008
My name is the Rev. King Kelly, and Pat Kelly, the Democratic candidate for Athens County sheriff, is my younger brother. Pat has seven brothers, one sister and one dear mother who on Christmas Day will turn 92 years young. The Kelly family is very proud of Pat for his accomplishments, not only here in Athens County but worldwide as an international police trainer.>>

Endorsement: Payne superior to Pancake in county commissioner race
October 30, 2008
We favor Larry Payne in his campaign against Jim Pancake for Athens County commissioner. Payne is level-headed and experienced, and seems focused on the most important missions of county government, operating within a budget, providing necessary services, and encouraging job growth.>>
