November 20, 2008
We have a grab-bag of commentary today, including a few words about the notorious anti-vegan commentary, Nick’s departure, school-funding, and two fascinating columns. No cats, however.>>

Readers’ Forum: History won’t be so kind when it comes to assessing America now
November 20, 2008
How will history books cover American culture in 200 years? I am of the opinion that history will see the American lust for credit and insatiable desire for stuff with the same evolved disapproval that we view the Ancient Roman lust for blood and violence. Over the past 30 years, the word “entitlement” has come to take on a whole new significance in America.>>

Readers’ Forum: Let’s hope that Obama resists pressure to appoint Summers to Treasury
November 20, 2008
The euphoria was bound to wear off, though I did not believe it would occur so quickly. I refer, of course to the president-elect, whose transition team has been leaking names of possible cabinet members for several days. A number of names mentioned early seemed to illustrate encouraging signs that Barack Obama plans to launch his presidency balancing bold initiatives with practical ideas.>>

Letter: The mayor’s mainly at fault with regard to Chauncey’s troubles
November 20, 2008
This is in response to the feud taking place between Chauncey’s mayor and Village Council. The mayor should be ashamed of herself, for a woman who took an oath to serve and better a village that she knew well was in trouble when she took office. She has done nothing in my opinion but bring us further bad press and unnecessary expenses this village can ill afford, to make herself the “innocent” at the expense of the very people she swore to help.>>

Letter: Commentary about vegan dinner was unfair, torpedoing a positive event
November 20, 2008
While it may have seemed like a good idea to have a fish-out-of-water story in your newspaper, I am annoyed at the condescending tone in Morgan Hoover’s Nov. 13 commentary on vegan cooking, “Intrepid Meat-Eating Reporter Ventures Into Vegan Country.” It simply seemed like the author was more concerned about denigrating the environment and food than actually enjoying a new experience.>>

Letter: OU budget scare may just be a pretext to get your health benefits
November 20, 2008
When someone tries to convince you about bad news you already know, something else is going on. I got suspicious last Monday when the same bad news arrived three times in one day.>>

Letter: Medicinal plants have been shown to work against colds
November 20, 2008
Early this year, I become ill with a common cold. Like any other average American, I found time in my schedule to see a doctor at Ohio University’s Hudson Health Center. After putting up with the two-hour wait, I was finally brought into an office expecting to be prescribed some antibiotic and be on my way. However, the doctor gave me a home remedy using medicinal herbs in order to build my immunity. Personally, I thought it was crazy, and I had just wasted my time and money, but within three days of eating these immunity-building plants, I was cured.>>

Letter: Please don’t take the anti-vegan commentary as truth or fact

I am writing to provide a rebuttal to the Nov. 13 commentary “First-Person Commentary: Intrepid Meat-Eating Reporter Ventures Into Vegan Country” by Morgan Hoover, one of your campus reporters.>>

Letter: Reporter mishandled story on vegan dinner, did hatchet-job
November 17, 2008
I was saddened to see such blatant ignorance and bias in Morgan Hoover’s portrayal of the Vegan Thanksgiving event I attended this past Tuesday (The NEWS, Nov. 14). In her article, she painted herself as a normal outsider in some green-loving, hippie, liberal cult. I don’t know how she could possibly wonder or doubt, as she did in her article, whether or not she “was being closed-minded for being wholly uncomfortable the entire evening.” Certainly she was.>>

Letter: Meat-eating reporter carved right into vegan dinner, but why?
November 17, 2008
Ohio University junior and Athens NEWS campus reporter Morgan Hoover really knows how to sink her teeth into a story. She goes straight for the kill, spills the blood, strips the meat off, and reveals the bare bones of what’s really going on in our community. In her Nov. 13 hunting and gathering of facts, “First-Person Commentary: Intrepid Meat-eating Reporter Ventures Into Vegan Country,” Hoover carves out her own cutesy yet vicious narrative of the annual Vegan Thanksgiving event that took place on Tuesday Nov. 11.>>

Letter: In the wake of the presidential election, we must seize the day
November 17, 2008
This is a reminder for all of us who elected Barack Obama president, who are excited about new possibilities around the country: The slogan “Yes, we did” is satisfying, but it’s already history, so here’s a new one. “Now we must_________”. You fill in the blank.>>

Letter: Student’s suicide shows importance of building a welcoming community
November 17, 2008
As many of you know, last week, a student at Ohio University, Patrick Gorman, committed suicide recently. I can’t say that I was best friends with Pat, but I did have the pleasure of having a conversation with him two or three times every week last year. He was the cashier at the store where I bought beer, and was the roommate of a student who is very active with Students for a Democratic Society.>>

Commentary: The threat of Green Obama
November 13, 2008
President-elect Barack Obama has inherited the in-box from hell, but you could practically smell the fear in some other quarters as he listed his top priorities in his victory speech in Chicago: “two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.” There will be general rejoicing if he can end the wars and solve the financial crisis, but “a planet in peril” is shorthand for climate change, and some people’s oxen will be severely gored if he acts decisively on the global warming agenda.>>

Commentary: Payday lenders: Shape up or ship out
November 13, 2008
Last week 64 percent of Ohio voters said “yes” on Issue 5 and capped interest rates on payday loans. The short-term loan industry is openly mourning its loss, but no one is listening.>>

Letter: Golf-course chemicals threaten city water more than bacteria
November 13, 2008
Athens had a scare last week. At one point, the whole city was asked not to even boil the water. There was a full ban on water use because of the detected presence of a high enough threshold of ecoli, which is associated with fecal matter or sewage.>>
