Letter: The major parties really goofed in missing an ideal VP candidate
October 9, 2008
To the Editor:
I believe that both political parties have passed up a golden opportunity to pick an ideal vice-presidential running mate. Namely, me. Here are the reasons:
First, I am older than Barack Obama and can therefore temper his youth with experience, and I am younger than John McCain and can offer the energy of youth. (Well, I’m only one year younger than McCain, but that is still younger.)
Secondly, I lived for over 30 years on the West Coast in California, which makes me an expert on Hawaii, and also all of the Pacific Island nations. And, unlike one of the current vice-presidential candidates, I have actually visited not only all the countries of North America (except that commie nation Cuba), but also many European countries. I have even been as close as 15 feet to the Queen of England! This obviously makes me an expert on international affairs.
I am not an elitist. I prefer a good ol’ California Merlot with my brie. Sometimes I even enjoy a shot of Maker’s Mark with a Sierra Nevada chaser. To further illustrate my good ol’ boy down-home credentials, I once drove my pickup truck when I went to dinner at Gordon Getty’s home on Nob Hill. Mr. Getty’s valet parking boys were quite impressed.
In all fairness, even though my qualifications are obviously great, I need to mention a couple of things that might make me a less than perfect vice-presidential candidate. I would have great difficulty playing the “guilt by association” game that at least one current candidate is playing. I would also have a problem in denying scientific consensus regarding global warming and evolution. I would probably end up offending the religious right, not to mention the religious center and religious left.
Perhaps the honorable thing to do is to respectfully decline any forthcoming offer from either Sen. Obama or Sen. McCain.
