Letter: How can OU be ‘green’ with all those Peden Stadium lights?

To the Editor:
My name is Johnny Bobo. I am a sixth-grader at Coolville Elementary. As anyone who was at the Ohio Bobcats’ Homecoming parade may have noticed, the Bobcats are emphasizing the fact that they are a “green” college, but it occurred to me that they are not. At the past two home football games, the stadium lights have been on prior to and during the game. These games took place in the middle of the afternoon. So why were the lights on? I figured out that they had a total of 228 unnecessary light bulbs on. I looked up stadium lighting on the Internet, and the average amount of wattage per bulb is anywhere between 400 and 1,550 watts per hour, per bulb. Now that means that they are using anywhere from 115,200 to 432,000 watts. To me that does not seem to be “green”.

Great letter Johnny, and a very good question. Another question is why they use chemical, petroleum based fertilizers and herbicides on their golf course, contaminating the Hocking River?
