Letter: Elderly caregivers series succeeded thanks to the help of many people
May 8, 2008
To the Editor:
Thank you for all who helped with the Caregivers of the Elderly Series.
I would like to thank everyone who contributed to an extremely successful series of five evening workshops for “Caregivers of the Elderly” in April. Athens Public Library, who gave us space for our meetings, Ohio University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and Western Reserve Geriatric Education Center sponsored the program.
The presenters made the series successful, sharing their expertise and time: Cathy Ash, LSW, spoke with me about community resources; William Walker, attorney at law, covered legal issues; Wayne Carlsen, D.O., addressed making tough decisions; Ed Potkanowicz, Ph.D., discussed physical activity, both for the caregiver and the elderly person receiving care; and Tina McClelland, R.N.C., spoke with me about dealing with the health-care system. Deborah Meyer, Ph.D., RN, and Ellen Peterson, RN, of the Geriatric Medicine Department at OU-COM, wrote the grant to fund the series and organized the entire event. Without them, the program would not have happened. We hope to obtain funding for next year and make this an annual event.
