Letter: Proposal for residents to take in homeless has a few flaws

January 28, 2008

I think Mr. Liam Joshua Cohen's idea about everyone doing their part to help the homeless is great! (The NEWS, Jan. 24)

We should all open our homes to those in need! Most of us can make space. We can provide some meals, and give up extra clothing we don't need. Our closets have way more stuff than we really need.

We can also offer transportation to these struggling families and individuals so they can get to the unemployment office, apply for assistance, go to job interviews, and get to medical and dental appointments to help them with their long-neglected physical needs. We can help them find vocational training. We can listen to them as they unload their hurts and anger, and even cry with them over the circumstances that left them so desperate.

Great idea! We can do it! But unfortunately, we won't. We value our time, our privacy, our things too much. We can at least throw a little money toward organizations like Good Works to soothe our consciences, and let someone else do the hard work. Let them do the job, but not in our neighborhood!

Mr. Cohen's idea is great! Maybe The Athens NEWS should do a story on how he is housing the poor so we can learn from his example and be encouraged to do likewise!
