To quote George Harrison, "All things must pass," and so it goes that spring quarter has come and gone, giving us eight weeks of rain and two without, certainly not contiguous.

I've been writing this column for a long time. Like it or not, it is an indisputable fact, unless you think that something close to 10 years isn't a long time. Maybe you think like that, and more power to you. Being that the end of the world really seems to be coming soon, well, I've started to become a bit philosophical again.

I woke up one Saturday and said, "So when are we going to go to the dog shelter to get a dog?" It turned out to be that very day, and a good thing, too. The dog that called me out there, let's call him Bobo (I do, anyway), was apparently scheduled to be put down three days later. He's absolutely one of the most intelligent, unique and best friends a fellow could have. We've been together almost 12 years now.

I feel good that I got a bit of a garden in on the one sunny day we had a couple of weeks ago. So far the deer have stayed away from it. Of course, me living in a tent right beside the garden might be helping a bit.

Tim Peacock had a dream. He wanted to hear and see live music. Living here in the backwaters of American culture, he found great live music to be too rare a commodity, so he did something about it. The logical conclusion of this can be found in Nelsonville this weekend.

The power of music to move and unite people was proved once again to me in a powerful way this past weekend. I was fortunate enough to play two concerts to two incredible crowds.

I have a prickly situation in my hands. Quite. When we moved into our current, adorable home, I found an abandoned cactus in the weeds beside the driveway. I recognized that I could probably replant this little fellow and it just might survive. I did so, and so it did. I might feel some regret for this now.

I hope you have a boat tethered to a second-story window or the roof! If it keeps raining like it has been, these April Showers best be bringing the Mayflower, because not too many flowers can bloom under water. Be careful. Carry heavy things when crossing moving water. Trust me.

I like to read when I eat. I know that Hagbard Celine advises against this in his missive, "Never Whistle While You're Pissing," but as usual, I read that while I was eating, so I figured I'd just continue on my way. Then recently, I thought, "Perhaps that is my problem," just continuing on my way.

I saw some great April Fool's jokes last week. Like when the bar crowd actually listened to Ernie Hendrickson's set at Jackie O's last week. Boy, they got him good. He was totally freaked out. He even asked them if everything was all right. I almost cried.
