We urge county residents to vote yes on Issues 1, 5 & 6

For the good of our community, we recommend "yes" votes on three countywide tax issues - Issue 1 (the TB clinic levy), Issue 5 (for emergency medical services), and Issue 6 (developmental disabilities). (We already endorsed the library and senior meals levies, Issues 2 and 4.)

Yes, actually, we do need a watchdog in the courthouse

We urge Athens County voters to choose incumbent Athens County Auditor Jill Thompson when they go to the polls Nov. 4. As auditor for the past 14 years, Thompson has done a good job monitoring the expenditure of public funds by other county officials and departments, while professionally serving the everyday needs of county residents.

Southeast Ohio needs Phillips’ leadership more than ever

We strongly recommend the re-election of state Rep. Debbie Phillips, D-Albany, for a final term in the Ohio House. Phillips will be term-limited after she's re-elected to another term representing the 94th House District.

We pick McCarthy for common pleas judge

We urge Athens County voters to retain George McCarthy as Athens County common pleas judge. While McCarthy's opponent, Herman A. Carson, is a seasoned and quality lawyer who would make a good judge, we've been impressed by McCarthy's performance since taking over for longtime Common Pleas Judge Michael Ward in May 2013.

Support improved pool and park facilities; yes on 8

It makes good sense for Athens voters to lend their support to local Issue 8 on the Nov. 4 General Election ballot. Informally called the "parks and rec levy," Issue 8 will renew the 0.1 income tax levy from 1996 that built the Athens Community Center.

David Pepper; he will serve justice, not ideology or party

We enthusiastically endorse David Pepper as Ohio Attorney General in the Nov. 4 election. Pepper is a smart and energetic candidate of integrity who will upgrade an office that's been vulnerable to special interest and political influence under incumbent Mike DeWine.

We support the right to protect local water; yes on 7

We support a "yes" vote on Issue 7 on the Athens city general election ballot Nov. 4. This ordinance, if passed, will seek to ban shale oil and gas drilling in the city, as well as related activities such as deep injection wells for fracking/drilling wastes.

Senior services levy renewal has big payoff for small price

If there was ever a suitable use for taxpayer money, it's to pay for senior nutrition programs that help older people stay in their homes and live independently. That's why we strongly support the Senior Services Renewal Levy that will appear on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

Help our library system continue to excel; yes on levy

Athens County has a public library system that's the envy of southeast Ohio, and rivals in quality library systems in much larger metro areas. We can uphold that quality in the face of crippling budget cuts by the state, by passing the local library levy that's on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.
