Playoff system a boon for fans, and smaller universities like OU

By Wes Mayberry
The Brigham Young Cougars will take on the San Diego State Aztecs tonight (Thursday) in the Poinsettia Bowl, which will mark this season's third bowl game. Although the playoff system that will be introduced in the upper ranks of college football in 2014 looks promising, fans can still currently enjoy 35 nationally televised bowl games to conclude the college season.

Excess of turnovers means surprise loss for ’Cats

By Wes Mayberry
With the 2012-13 college bowl season kicking off this past Saturday, I was going to devote today's column to this wonderful time of the year, when college football fans like myself get to enjoy just shy of a month's worth of bowl games. These games in December and early January typically feature some entertaining matchups between teams that normally don't face each other.

Ohio men's team needs remedy for its road woes

By Wes Mayberry
The Ohio Bobcat basketball team was supposed to be one of the more talented "mid-major" conference teams in the country entering this season. Though head coach Jim Christian was hired to replace the departed John Groce, nearly everything remained the same with the Sweet 16 team that finished last season ranked No. 25 in the country.

’Cats relieved to get bowl matchup in Louisiana

By Wes Mayberry
A suspenseful nine-day waiting period for the Ohio Bobcat football team came to an end when they secured a bowl berth this past Sunday night. Since the 'Cats had lost four of their last five games, there was no guarantee they would be receiving a coveted invite.

138-point basketball college scoring record nothing to sneeze at

By Wes Mayberry
Most collegiate basketball players would love to be able to score 70 points in a game all by themselves. That's just what Faith Baptist Bible College's David Larson did in a Division III game on Tuesday, Nov. 20, but this performance was not the highlight of the contest. Instead, a member of the opposing team broke a seemingly unbreakable record.

By Wes Mayberry
Last Friday's 28-6 defeat to the Kent State Golden Flashes marked the final time for 19 Ohio University seniors to play a regular-season game in a Bobcat football uniform. Though the 'Cats finished the season losing four of their last five games, these seniors can reflect on a career that was mainly a resounding success.

Injury-plagued 'Cats face Kent with bowl bid in doubt

By Wes Mayberry
Is it possible that the same football team that started the season 7-0 and was the first team in the country to gain bowl eligibility is now fighting for its postseason life? According to both the TV and radio outlets broadcasting the Ohio Bobcats' game last Wednesday night (Nov. 14), being left out of a bowl is certainly within the realm of possibility for the now 8-3 'Cats (4-3 MAC) after their 52-27 stomping at the hands of the Ball State Cardinals.

Despite changes, basketball team has stayed on same track

By Wes Mayberry
Following their 85-47 victory over the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks in a game in which they led wire to wire, the Ohio Bobcat basketball team appears to be in mid-season form. Even though the 'Cats are just two regular-season games into the Jim Christian era, I have come away impressed with how the team hasn't missed a beat from last year's stellar campaign.
