Haze was the son of the late Dessie Carsey and Winfield Hudnell. He was born and raised in Hebbardsville, Ohio. He retired after 35 years of service with Diamond Stone Quarry in Albany. Later Haze worked for Morris Excavating.

She was employed as an administrative assistant at Hocking Valley Bank and was a member of New Life Assembly of God. She and her husband moved to Guysville in 1979. Alice loved and enjoyed her family and grandchildren.
Alfreda West Goff, 94, passed away on June 9, 2010, at Lake Forest Good Samaritan Village in Denton, TX. She was born on March 8, 1916 in Sugar Creek, OH. She was the daughter of the late Edward and Ruth West.
Mrs. Goff was a retired elementary school teacher, having started her career in a one room schoolhouse in Millfield, OH. She later continued her career teaching in Avon Lake, Ironton, and Willard, OH. She earned her Associate's Degree from Ohio University and returned there to earn her Bachelors Degree in 1971. She spent the 70 years of her married life serving the ministry of her late husband, the Rev. Drell H. Goff, with the Church of the Nazarene.

John S. Blazier, 87, of Athens, died Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. He was born June 29, 1922 in Shade, the son of the late Fred C. and Mary Elizabeth Sweeney Blazier.
He graduated from Shade High School in 1942 and then served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Saint Paul in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during World War II. Upon returning, John devoted his life to farming and worked at McBee's Corp. until his retirement after 31 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, McBee's Quarter Century Club, K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion and VFW Post 3477.

He was born March 18, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio. Bill was a 1948 graduate of Lakewood High School with degrees from The University of Chicago (Liberal Arts, with honors, 1950), and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration (MBA with distinction, 1962; DBA in Marketing, 1967). He was elected a Baker Scholar in the MBA Program (top 5% of the graduating class) and was awarded a Ford Foundation Fellowship in the DBA Program.

A 1938 graduate of Athens High School, she enjoyed sports and athletics events. She was a bowler and golfer, participating in the Athens Women's Bowling Association and the Ladies League at The Elm Golf Course.

He and his brothers enjoyed tractor pulling with the Bruce Bros. Pulling Tractor. He was a member of SEO Tractor Pulling Association. He also enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, and dearly loved his family.

Charles R. "Charlie" Fairchild, 70, of Creola, passed away Friday, May 28, 2010 at his residence.
He was born August 17, 1939 in Johnson County, Kentucky, son of the late Roy and Arvie Spradlin Fairchild. Charles was married to Norma Collins Fairchild, who survives, for almost 48 years.
Charlie was a retired, loyal and dedicated employee of CSX railroad for 43 years.
John "Jack"Ě Leroy Green, 76, of Athens passed away at his home on Friday, May 28, 2010 after battling cancer.
Jack was born October 13, 1933 in Chauncey, Ohio to John Thomas Green and Flossie Mae Dailey. After graduation from Chauncey Dover High School, Jack enlisted and served in the United States Navy as a Torpedomans Mate 2nd class Petty Officer on the USS Bushnell and USS Gilmore.
In 1957, Jack married his wife of 52 years Sara L. Roberts. Long time residents of Athens, they resided on Elizabeth Drive where Jack served as Ward 1 City Councilman for 6 years. He also served his community as a State Highway Patrol Auxiliary member.
Ada G. Bradley, 84, of Athens, died Thursday morning, May 27, 2010 at the home of her son and daughter in law, Omar and Nancy Bradley, in Hurricane, WV. Born July 20, 1925 in Bays (Nicholas County), West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Lula Belle Smith Mullins.
She attended school in Wingrove, WV and worked as a seamstress on Paris Island, SC while her husband was in the U.S. Marine Corps. She and her late husband moved to Athens County in 1957. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and history. She was an avid reader, enjoying literature, and had a friendly and outgoing personality, never meeting a stranger.
Jesse Ross Vail, 60, Athens, passed away Tuesday May 25, 2010, in the emergency room at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born in Texas on January 24, 1950, he was the son of the late Eileen Seifert Pyle and step son of James E. Pyle of Albany.
Jesse was a graduate of Alexander High School and Ohio University, and a Navy Veteran of Vietnam. He retired after 32 years at Meigs Middle School where he also coached football and track. He was a basketball offical, a licensed realtor, an avid O.U. Bobcat and Ohio State fan, a proud member of the N.R.A., Hocking Valley Sportsman Club, and Athens Elks Lodge 973. He loved to hunt and garden and always extended a helping hand to his beloved friends in the community.

Gregor B. Watson, 88, of Athens, died Monday afternoon, May 24, 2010 at The Arthur G. James Cancer Center, Columbus. Born January 10, 1922 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late James and Jenette Murray Watson.
A graduate of Ohio University, he was employed at The ARO Corp in Bryan, Ohio as an advertising manager. He and his wife operated the Watson Frame Shop for 10 years in Athens. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre.

James C. Sloan, born June 25, 1919 in Marion, Ohio, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2010; he had been an Athens area resident since October, 2007. Sloan served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and not long after his discharge began his professional career as an office assistant at Marion Federal Savings & Loan Association. Sloan retired 32 years later as its Chief Executive Officer and for a number of years thereafter remained active in the business as the Chair of its Board of Directors.

Born August 2, 1956, in Zanesville, he is the son of Mary Lou Guthrie Rigg and the late George S. Ragan. He was owner of Ragan Transportation and a member of the NBHA and sons of the American Legion, Wilkesville.
Dr. Steven G. Carin, Jr., 67, of Guysville, died Friday evening, May 14, 2010 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born Nov. 11, 1942 in Elyria, he was the son of the late Steven G. and Elizabeth Vanderson Carin.
A graduate of Elyria High School, Ohio Northern University, and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, he was a physician for over 35 years. He had been in private practice in Newcomerstown and has been at the Ohio University Osteopathic Medicine College and University Medical Associates, as a professor and physician since 1980. He has served as the Team Physician in the Ohio University Athletic Department for many years.
Earl H. Funk of Athens died Friday evening, May 14th, 2010, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. † Born August 8, 1930 in Athens, he was the son of the late Earl L. and Ruth V. Hall Funk. He was a 1949 graduate of Athens High School and later attended Ohio University.
His life was one of love, care, and commitment centered around family and community. Following a first date on May 14th 1949, he had an enduring love affair with his wife Pat that lasted 61 years to the day.
He was dedicated to the Athens community. An active member of the Athens business community, Earl was a fixture on Court St. for over 35 years where he owned and operated Sports Inc. and later played a key role in establishing Capstone Properties with his son.
Dolores Jean Hashman, 78, of Athens, died Thursday, May 13, 2010 at her home. Born April 26, 1932 in Sharpsburg, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Julia Mulpas Quinn.
She was retired from Ohio University and was a member of the Canaanville United Methodist Church. She was also an avid bowler and helped establish a bowling league for the mentally and physically challenged.
John Leroy "Jack"Ě Vickers, 78, of Athens, died Wednesday morning, May 12, 2010 at his home after a one year battle with cancer. His family was at his bedside.
He was born on September 21, 1931 in Athens to the late Jesse K. and M. Catharine Weller Vickers. On December 18, 1955, he married Martha Adams Vickers. He was inducted into the US Army in January 1956 and served with the Big Red "1"Ě at Ft. Riley, Kansas through December 1957. Jack graduated from Athens High School in 1949 and received his BS in Pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy in 1955 and did his internship at Clines Pharmacy in Athens. He was a registered pharmacist for 50 years and retired from Medical Center Pharmacy in Athens, and Prescription Shops in Athens and Glouster as a partner-owner.
Mark Kevin Vaughan, 53, of San Jose CA (formerly of Athens OH) passed away peacefully on January 2, 2010. Mark, a/k/a "Nuke", died at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center of complications related to liver failure. His youngest sister, Cynthia Vaughan Welch, was by his side.
Born in Little Neck, NY, on May 27, 1956, Mark graduated from Athens High in 1974. He lettered in baseball as pitcher and in football as starting center. Mark earned the nickname "Nuke" for his explosive power as a pitcher for the AHS Bulldogs. † While an OU student, Mark played baseball and hockey; later he played semi-pro football in OH for the Big Bend Warriors. † Mark began his boxing career in Chauncey, coached by Dr. Muang Gyi. † With a professional record of 27 and 3. Mark opted for abrupt retirement when his appendix exploded during a Salt Lake City fight.
Christina Rose Crabtree, 75, of Athens, passed away, Saturday morning, May 8, 2010 at her home.
Born June 28, 1934 in The Plains, she was the daughter of the late Oakey Phillips and Margretta Bishop Phillips.
She was a former employee of Rax and Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary of The Plains VFW Post 7174. She was an active member on the Board of APAC and on the Board of Tri County Community Action.
Eric Gene French, 40, of Gaffney, South Carolina, formerly of Athens, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at his residence. Born in Athens, he was the son of Dolly Adams Newsome and husband, Don of Gaffney, S.C. and Larry French and wife, Monna of Albany.
Garland R. Young, 68, of Shade, died Monday morning, May 3, 2010 at Genesis-Good Samaritan Hospital, Zanesville. Born December 19, 1941 in Carseytown (Athens County), he was the son of the late Ray S. and Margaret L. Carsey Young.
He attended Shade Schools and was employed at area farms as a laborer. He was a member of the Faith Tabernacle Church, Nelsonville and lifelong Athens County resident.
Eldon "Sam"Ě Rutter, 68, of Millfield, died late Saturday evening at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital. Born August 14, 1941 in Millfield, he was the son of the late Carlos and Lizzie McCune Rutter.
He is survived by his brother, Jimmy (Verna) Rutter of Glouster; and his girlfriend, Ida Kasler.
Jo Lavon Alderman, 85 of Glouster passed away Sunday May 2, 2010 at the Selby Hospital in Marietta. Born September 30, 1924 in Montgomery County, she was the daughter of the late Lester R. and Helen M. Stephenson Faires.
She was the former owner and operator of the Economy Store in Glouster, was a substitute teacher for the Glouster School District and worked at the Wright Field during WWII. She was a member of the Glouster Church of Christ, past President of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority at Ohio University, and attended the books and brunch club at the Glouster Library.

Born June 15, 1915, in Pilgrims Knob, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Orson Pratt and Lydia M. Rife Ratliff. † She was a faithful servant to her Lord, a homemaker, had worked in health care and teaching.
Margaret Deppen, 100, of Athens, died Wednesday evening, April 21, 2010, at The Lindley Inn, The Plains, Ohio. She was born March 17, 1910 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, the daughter of the late John and Mary Funck Deppen.
Margaret was graduate of St. Augustine Academy (Ft. Wayne), earned a BA degree from St. Mary of the Woods College (Terre Haute), in 1933 and a Master Degree in Education from Indiana University (Bloomington), in 1948.
She spent several years in secretarial work with the Lincoln National Life Insurance Co., Ft. Wayne, the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board, Washington, D.C., and the Illinois Institute of Technology, in Chicago.

Ellen Lucille "Granny"Ě Carsey, 96, of Athens, Ohio, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Waddell Nursing Home, Galax, VA. She was born on April 4, 1914, in Racine, Ohio, the daughter of the late Harry and Bessie Aldridge.
She was a graduate of Amesville High School where she participated in cross country, track, basketball, and played the violin. Ellen was a longtime resident of Athens, Ohio. She was employed by Ohio University and O'Bleness Memorial Hospital. She was a past member of the Eastern Star.
Anna Ruth Weekley, 93, of Heath, died Friday morning, April 23, 2010 at Arlington Nursing Care in Newark.
Born March 24, 1917 in Coshocton County, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Hall Sycks.
She is survived by a daughter, Dottie Sherwood of Heath; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and eight great great grandchildren.
Linda Rose Smith, 62 of, Trimble, died Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at Grant Medical Center, Columbus. Born June 11, 1947 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Chester L. and Lola L. McNutt Riggle. A 1965 graduate of Shade High School, she was a member of the House of Prayer in Glouster.
Linda is survived by her son, Keith Smith and his girlfriend Pauline Curry of Chauncey; her longtime companion, Larry Pyke of Trimble; a brother, Dan (Alice) Riggle of Chauncey; a nephew, Hank Riggle of Chauncey and a niece, Laura Riggle of Corning.
Besides her parents she is preceded in death by a half brother, Jerry Perry.
Lula 'Ruth' Thorne Perry, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in The Plains, Ohio.
Ruth was the daughter of A.W. and Ruth Emma Howard Thorne. She was born on November 10, 1919 in Akron and moved to Gallia County as a young girl. † She was a graduate of Rio Grande College.
Ruth was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and homemaker. † She enjoyed attending bird dog field trials with her husband, Tom.
William Joseph Pierre, 51, of Athens died Monday, April 5, 2010 at his home. Born April 18, 1958 in Athens, he was the son of the late James H. and Oma Lucille Mitchell Pierre.
A graduate of Athens High School, he attended Ohio University. He had been employed at Ohio University, West Green, in Food Service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was an active participant with The Gathering Place in Athens.
Donald E. Perry, 91, of Athens, Ohio University Professor Emeritus of Industrial Technology died of heart failure Monday afternoon, April 5, 2010, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital. Born January 22, 1919 in North Fairfield, Ohio, he was the son of the late Thayer K. and Marjorie J. Hindley Perry.
He was a graduate of North Fairfield High School and Ohio University. His graduate studies led to a master's degree from Ohio University and a doctorate from Bradley University.
Mike Grippa, 32, of Shade, died Friday evening, April 2, 2010 at James Cancer Hospital in Columbus after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Born December 17, 1977 in Lincoln, Nebraska, he was the son of Paul and Kathleen Rose Grippa of Athens.
Mike was a 1996 graduate of Athens High School where he was a three sport athlete earning multiple varsity letters. Mike also was an avid outdoorsman and a dedicated and loving father.
F. Lavella Scurlock, 93, of Athens, passed away Friday, April 2, 2010 at Kimes Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born January 7, 1917 in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Bertha Frazee Heightland.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Secoy; a son Donald (Janine) Scurlock, both of Athens; seven grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a sister, Jean Lightle of Washington Court House.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald H. Scurlock; an infant daughter, Nancy Kay; a son-in-law, Roger Secoy; four sisters and three brothers.

Born Sept. 13, 1935 in Meigs County, he was the son of the late Edgar A. and Sibyl P. Smith Dorst.
Martin retired as the Shade Post Master in 1992 and was a US Army Veteran. He was a member of Shade United Methodist Church, Savannah Lodge #466 F & AM, Albany Chapter # 558 OES, and Shade Community Center.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Grace M. Swartz Dorst; two sons, Craig A. (Brenda) Dorst of Athens, and David M. (Amy) Dorst of Athens; a daughter, Tammy J. (Jerry) Foster of Shade; nine grandchildren, Zachary, Gabe, Addison Dorst, Grant and Olivia Dorst, Shane, Travis (Nikki), Stephanie and Trett Foster; and one great grandson, Landon Tyler Foster.
James S. Anastas, of The Plains, died Saturday morning, March 27, 2010 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. He was born of Greek emigrant parents in Clarksburg, West Virginia and came to Athens by way of Ohio University. He had been in the restaurant, tavern, and candy business. He was also employed by The Athens National Bank and Bank One. A veteran of World War II, whereas he served as a sergeant in the infantry.
James is survived by his wife, Lynn W. Yanity, Jr. and sister-in-law, Joyce Yanity of Athens.

Dorothy L. Smith of Athens, passed away, Wednesday evening, March 24, 2010 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home, The Plains. She was born October 24, 1919 in Athens County, the daughter of the late Joseph I. and A. Ethel (Heath) Walker; Joseph was followed, in death by his second wife, Mildred (Bretz) Walker.
Dorothy's husband, George Nathan Smith, preceded her in death in 1980. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Thelma McFarland of Columbus and Lorraine McFarland of Alauchua, Fla.; step-sister Sally Dotson of Reynoldsburg.She attended school at Rome Canaan and graduated from Athens High School. She was a longtime resident of First Street, Athens.
Lena White, 90, of Lake Placid, Florida, formerly of Athens, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010 in Lake Placid.
Born April 21, 1919 in Noble County, she was the daughter of the late Ross and Annie Brunsfield Roe.
Lena and her late husband managed the former Jake's Restaurant for over 35 years and was a member of The Church of Christ in Zanesville.
Betty S. Poston of Athens passed away Sunday, March 21, 2010 at her home due to complications of Parkinson's Disease. Born in Chester (Meigs County), she was the daughter of the late Alvin and Hilda Marie Young Stiles.
She was a graduate of Olive-Orange High School in Tuppers Plains and Ohio University. She retired as a secretary from Ohio University. She was a member of Blackburn Hill Church of Christ, Sigma Phi Gamma, and C.C.L. She had also volunteered at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Betty is survived by her husband, William F. Born August 21, 1930, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Grace Linscott Gabriel. † She was a 1949 graduate of The Plains High School, worked at McBees 18 years, and retired from Ohio University.

Dorothy L. Morse, 76, Wellston, passed away Thursday morning, March 18, 2010, at her home after an extended illness with her husband Harold at her side.
Born March 24, 1933 in Athens, the daughter of the late Harold and Mabel Davis Barrows. Dorothy spent the majority of her life in Athens County, having been a 1951 graduate of Waterloo High School, she was employed early in life with McBee Systerms and retired in 1993 after twenty-two years with Ohio University. She and Harold spent their later years enjoying camping and traveling over the United States, where they met others sharing the same interests and developed lasting memories and friendships. Dorothy was an active member of the Albany VFW Post 9893 Auxiliary.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Harold Morse, sons Jerry Johnson of Athens and Steve Johnson of Columbus, and her beloved cocker spaniel Toby.
Margaret Hamer, 87, of Chauncey, died late Wednesday evening, March 17, 2010 at Russell Nursing Home. Born December 1, 1922 in Chauncey, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Pauline Murray Jackson.
She is survived by two sons, Steve (Janet) Hamer of Atco, NJ, Roger (Barb) Hamer of Chauncey; four grandchildren, Scott, Amanda, Ken, Laura; and † two great grandchildren, Morgan and Joshua.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Hamer.
Earl A. Knies died on March 14, 2010 after a courageous ten-year battle with cancer. He was born on July 11, 1936 in White Haven, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mae A. and Herman H. Knies, and a brother, Herman.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth (Betsy); sons, Jeffrey (Lorrie) of Lovingston, Va., Allan (David) of San Francisco, Ca., and Christopher of Athens, Oh.; grandson, Jason Knies of Lovingston, Va.; two brothers, John (Mary) of Rockville, Md. and George (Pat) of British Columbia, Canada; and many nieces and nephews.
He received a B.A. from Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa. in 1958, where he was president of the Alpha Iota chapter of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa. He received a M.A. from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa. in 1960 and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1964.
He began teaching at Ohio University in 1964 specializing in nineteenth-century English literature with an emphasis on the Victorian Novel. He taught in the Honors Tutorial Program and designed and taught a Tier III class, "úDarwin among the Poets." He served as Chair and Graduate Chair of the Department of English and served on several University and Department committees.
Geneva Mullins, 54, of Guysville, died Thursday morning, March 11, 2010 at the home of her daughter in Stewart.
Born March 11, 1956 in Clintwood, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Garnet and Peggy Mullins.

Helen O'Nail, 90, of Chauncey, died Thursday afternoon, March 11, 2010 at Russell Nursing Home. Born September 21, 1919 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Minnie Tippie Wiseman.
She is survived by five children, Dan (Karen) O'Nail of Chicago, Illinois, Nancy (Dick) Jackson, Anita (Charles) Matheny, Fredericka Shover, all of Chauncey, and † Betty (Clarence) Davis of Lancaster; a daughter-in-law, Shirley O'Nail of Chauncey; eleven grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; two brothers, Roger (Betty) Wiseman of Athens, Carl (Marilyn) Wiseman of Hopewell, Virginia; and a sister-in-law, Mary Kay Wiseman of Lancaster.

She was co-owner of Romano's Pizza in Nelsonville, a member of The Plains United Methodist Church, and former member of the Elks Lodge in Nelsonville.

Clarence George "úRex" Hoisington, Sr., 89, of Athens, died Monday evening, March 8, 2010 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born October 9, 1920 in Sugar Creek, he was the son of the late Henry G. and Katherine I. Risley Hoisington.
He was employed at many jobs including Ohio University and operated with his wife, Rex and Son Service Station on W. Union St., Athens for 18 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theatre and was a member of K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion.
Rex is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rose Ann Glozzer Hoisington; his children- Clarence George "úJay"(Pam) Hoisington, Jr. of Athens, Barbara (Bob) White of Orient and Jerry Tuvell of Columbus; grandchildren- Clarence G. (Mandy) Hoisington III of Athens, Kristina Kay (Greg) Jolley of New Marshfield, Brenda (Michael) Spicer of Orient, Robert (Melissa) White, Jr. of Warren, Chrissy (Jay) Connell of Hilliard and Cathy (Steve) Bravard of Newark; twelve great grandchildren; his ex-daughter in law, Pam (Steve) Knapp of Columbus; sisters in law- Birdie Hoisington and Katie Hoisington; and several nieces and nephews. He was loved dearly and his family will miss him.

Roger E. Moore, 79, of Belpre, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at Marietta Care and Rehabilitation Center.
Born October 18, 1930 in The Plains, he was the son of the late Wendell G. and Adrian R. Dickens Moore.
He retired from the Coolville post office as Post Master and was a US Air Force Veteran and an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife, A. Bryce Colton Davis Rutter, five month old son of Melissa Davis and Clyde Rutter died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. He was born September 25, 2009 in Gallipolis.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Austin and Kyle Ziolkowski; maternal grandmother, Judie Davis; paternal grandmother, Wanda Rutter; step grandmother, Juanita Rutter; aunts and uncles, Michelle and Lynn Swanger, Mike and Deanna Davis, Cindy and Bob and Caleb McFerren, Mark and Colleen Rutter, Sheri Perry, Andy and Tammy Rutter, Dan Rutter, and Barry and Kim Rutter; step aunts, Alecia and Jack Moquin, and Katrina and Dave Heineking.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Dennis Davis; and paternal grandfather, Larry "úBuck" Rutter.
Janet L. Biddle, 72, of Athens, died Thursday afternoon, March 4, 2010 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains. Born July 31, 1937 in Meigs County, she was the daughter of the late Gerald P. and Mabel E. Dixon King.
A graduate of Shade High School, she was a homemaker and also worked at McBee's Corp. and Buckeye Mart. She was a member of 1st United Methodist Church, Athens, Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority, and the National Guard Wives Association. She was a former resident of Grove City.
Barbara Young, 51, of Athens, died Thursday morning, March 4, 2010 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital. Born January 27, 1959 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Alvin and Mary Davis McDaniel.
She is survived by her husband, Ricky; three children, Josie (Jessie Taylor) Burchfield, Marcy (Steven) Burchfield-Miller, Bradley E. Burchfield, Jr.; three grandchildren, Johnathon Burchfield, Nathaniel Burchfield, Draven Miller; a sister, Shirley (Thomas) Fox; two brothers, Johnny Alvin (Sharon) McDaniel, Kenny (Debbie) McDaniel; several nieces and nephews.
Helmut T. Zwahlen, 71, of Athens, retired Russ Professor Emeritus of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Ohio University, died suddenly Sunday, February 28, 2010 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born February 1, 1939 in Thun, Switzerland, he was the son of the late Helmut and Johanna Burgi Zwahlen.
Dr. Zwahlen received his diploma in Mechanical Engineering, 1962, Institute of Technology of the State of Berne, Burgdorf, Switzerland, M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering, 1968, Ohio University and Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering, 1972, The Ohio State University. He taught at Ohio University from 1971 until 2009. His speciality was teaching human factors in aviation, manufacturing systems, and analytical foundations of Industrial and Systems Engineering. He was a visiting professor, University of Berne, Berne, Switzerland from 1985-86.
Abbott Pliny (Pete) Smith III, D.V.M., passed away February 22, 2010, with family as well as Beatrice Hagari of the Threshold Choir at his Grant Hospital bedside after a logging accident in his beloved Milliron Farm woods. Pete was born June 16, 1938 in Augusta, Maine, graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in veterinary medicine in 1962 and moved to Athens, Ohio in 1963 with family, including equines, dogs and a cat.
Pete was an honor roll member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, and Athens County Chapter of the Ohio Horseman's Council. Pete was preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth Saunders and Abbott Pliny Smith II. Pete is sadly missed by his wife of 50+ years, Virgina Joyann (Jody) Haley, son Abbott Pliny (Pat) Smith IV, daughter Jessica Smith Fox, daughter-in-law Karen Carsey Smith, son-in-law Richard Fox, grandsons (AJ & Grant Smith, Noah Fox), all of Athens, sister Carol Robinson (Colorado) and family, sister Susan Davis (Maine) and family, sister Janet Riben (Sweden) and family, and brother James Smith (Colorado) and family.
Sarah M. Linscott, 93, of Millfield, died Tuesday morning, March 2, 2010 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born April 29, 1916 in Chauncey, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Alice M. France Nye.
She attended Chauncey-Dover Schools and was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the Athens Church of Christ, and attended the Hooper Ridge Church of Christ and Glouster Church of Christ. She was a homemaker who enjoyed baking, cooking, and music. She was also a great pie and bread maker. She was our cookie angel, and an avid gardener who raised five grandchildren, Carl, Charlotte, Connie, Howard and Christina, in her home.
Mary Etta Nelson, 92, of Albany where she made her home with her daughter, formerly of Shade, passed away late Sunday evening, February 28, 2010 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born March 13, 1917 in Mingo County, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lewis L. and Rosella Mead White.
She spent most of her life in the Shade area and was a member of the Life Pointe Church of Athens.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Glenna Watkins of Athens and Pearlie White of Albany; her son, Lelin Nelson of Shade; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
David A. Hawk, 85, of The Plains, died Friday afternoon, February 26, 2010 at Riverside Methodist Hospital.
Born March 29, 1925 in Athens County, he was the son of the late Clarence D. and Mary C. Beckett Hawk.
He entered the US Navy in 1943 serving in WWII, Korea and Vietnam before retiring from the Navy in 1965 as a CPO. He then began employment at Douglas Aircraft in 1965 and retired from MacDonald Douglas Aircraft In 1987 as Acting Electrical Leadman. He was a life member of F 6 BMFI VFW, FRA and the American Legion.
Clifton R. Fraley, 92, Pomeroy, passed away Friday, February 26, 2010, at his residence.
Born February 5, 1918, in Kanawha, West Virginia, the son of the late Dennis and Lou Ella Cain Fraley. He was a coal miner and a member of United Mine Workers.
He is survived by children, Clifton Jr. of Pomeroy, Kay Woods of Longwood,Florida, Curtis of Pomeroy, Bonnie Jordan of Apopka, Florida, Larry of Tennessee, and Scarlett Ann Lyons of Rutland; 40 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a brother Jack; a sister Doris; and his wonderful nurses from Appalachian Community VNA Hospice, Lynn Zeigler and Susan Sterling
William D.(Bill) Lieuellen of Albany, Ohio went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at Riverside Methodist Hospital surrounded by family and his special lady friend.
He was born in Albany, to the late Arthur V. and Ora J. (Rathburn) Lieuellen on October 21, 1921.
Bill held numerous jobs over his lifetime. He worked at Goodyear Aircraft, Bridgewater Machine Shop, McBee (Litton Industries) and Southeastern Ohio Coal Company. He was a member and past master of Albany Masonic Lodge # 723 F & AM; member of Anchient & Excepted Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus 32nd Degree, Albany Eastern Star #558, Albany Grange #1611, Athens County Pomona Grange, Ohio State Grange, National Grange, Albany Senior Citizens, and AARP.
George Dwight Scott, 94, formerly of Athens, passed away peacefully at his home at Wesley Glen Retirement Community in Columbus on Wednesday, February 24, 2010. He was surrounded by his loving family.
"úScotty", as he was affectionately known, was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 67 years, Helen Rose Scott in 2006.
Dwight attended school in Columbus participating in sports, was a delivery boy for The Columbus Dispatch for four years and was a violinist in his school's Chamber Orchestra. Music remained a source of joy to him for his entire life. During his high school years, his family moved to New Marshfield, OH where he graduated from Waterloo High School.
Judith A. Edinger, 57, of Athens died suddenly, Tuesday, February 22, 2010 at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. Born June 13, 1952 in Woodriver, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Genevieve Skurnicki Pisarek, as well as a devoted, loving mother.
A 1970 graduate of Marquette High School, Alton, Ill., she received her B.S. in English and her M.S. in Education, both from Western Illinois University. She was an educator, recently retired from the position Director of Pre-Doctorial Education at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Before accepting the position of director she influenced and helped many young physicians as a learning specialist at OUCOM from 1986-2002. She retired from O.U. with 21 years of service. She was currently teaching in the College of Health and Human Services at O.U. courses on health policy.
Gary D. Nelson, 63, Albany, of Bailey Rd. passed away Monday February 22, 2010, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains, after an extended illness.
Born June 28, 1946, in Charleston, West Virginia, the son of Kathryn Keefer Higginbotham of Athens, and the late Ernest W. Nelson. He was a retired auto salesman and mechanic. Gary was a member of Constitution Lodge #426 F&AM, Athens County Shrine Club, and a social member of Albany VFW Post #9893.
In addtion to his mother he is survived by a daughter Kimberly (John Michael) Becher of Culloden, West Virginia; a grandson Ewan Becher; brothers John and Randy Nelson of Florida; and a half sister Rosalie Johnson of Shade.
William Albert Harmon passed away Monday, February 22, 2010 at his son's home in Athens. Born in Judsonia, Arkansas on June 17, 1915, he was the son of the late Alfred Roscoe and Mae Foster Harmon and the brother of the late L. Foster Harmon.
He graduated in 1936 from Ohio University and was employed by the University in the Business Office, advancing to the position of Comptroller. In 1939, he received his M.B.A. from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, and, six year later, he organized and managed the start-up of production of Vanadium Tool Company, an Athens-based company, manufacturing forged hand tools. He remained as Chief Officer and President of Vanadium until he sold the business in 1969.
Lois Sisk Caul passed away at the age of 86 on February 2010. She was a great lady and leaves behind many to whom she brought joy, hope, and happiness. Lois was born in Texarkana, Texas, on December 28, 1923, but resided for forty-five years in Athens, including at her home on East State Street and later at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains.
She and David Caul, a well-known psychiatrist with the Athens State Hospital system, were married for 41 years from March 1947 until he passed away in March 1988.
Lois is survived by her four children- Steve (Betsy) Caul, Robert "úBuzz" Caul both of Athens, Mike Caul of Tempe, Arizona and Carol (Bill) Ware of Houston, Texas. † She is also survived by her siblings, Jack, Ruth, Frank, Alma, Harvey, Glenn, and David, and numerous nieces and nephews.
