William Lee "Bill" Korner, 67, of New Marshfield, passed away peacefully at Riverside Hospital on Saturday, August 3, 2013. He was born June 7, 1946 in Shadyside, Ohio, the son of Finley Korner and Lula Powers Korner. He earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Ohio University.
Bill's professional life was devoted to education, developing the capabilities of children and adults in the community. During his early career at Athens High School, he introduced a work-study program. He is fondly recalled by students at East Elementary School where he served as principal. As Superintendent of the Athens County Board of MRDD, he took pride in working for the inclusion of individuals with special needs in schooling and work life. Following his retirement, he tutored students at Hocking Valley Community Residential Center in Nelsonville, Ohio.
Bill was deeply committed to his family. An avid sports fan, he introduced his sons to golf and tennis, and encouraged them in their sports and all other endeavors. He delighted in spending time with his grandchildren, other family, and friends and acquaintances from over 45 years in the Athens area.
Bill was a member of the New Marshfield United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping (for which he was publicly recognized), his home in the country, and his pets. He will be remembered for his determination to remain upbeat and his compassion for others.
Bill is survived by his wife, Suzanne; his sons- Bill of Washington DC, Ryan (Jess) of Perrysburg, Ohio, Luke of Tampa, Florida; his sons' mother Vicki; stepson, Jeremy (Rachel) Polley of Blacklick, OH and stepdaughter, Noelle (Wesley) Pierce of Nelsonville, Ohio; grandchildren- Max Coryell, Drew and Ben Korner; step-grandchildren- Elijah, Samuel and Isabella Polley, Noah and Abigail Pierce; brothers: Jim (Bobbi) Korner of State College, Pennsylvainia, and Tom Korner of Salem, Ohio; brothers-and sisters-in-law- Greg (Carol) Brooks, Eric (Jackie) Brooks, Julie Brooks, Jennifer (Steve) Eckard and Randy Brooks; mother- and father-in-law, Elsie and Bill Brooks.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Lora Brooks.
