Fracking is a threat to Athens’ valuable local food movement

To the Editor:

Picture this... At your local grocery store you find food labels that read "grown on Frack-Free land." It will be the next big thing, possibly even bigger than "organic." And this new label will appear on everything… vegetables, fruits, grains, meats and dairy products. I don't know about you, but I will be looking for these labels when I buy food in the future.

As I'm sure everyone is aware, Athens is famous for its locally grown foods and its supporters who only buy local. Well, sadly, there may come a day when Athens County will no longer be able to compete with imported foods and their labels that read "grown on Frack-Free land."

What will Athens become if it loses one of its strongest beacons, "Buy Local"?

I live on nearly 100 acres of land, and I see the dollar signs. However, I know that this greed will lead to our demise. Not only will Athens County be losing with anything "Locally grown," but home/property values will fall, and our health and our children's health may become a factor.
