Commissioners should join effort to enact spay-neuter policy at shelter

To the Editor:

The purpose of this letter is to encourage the Athens County Commissioners to join with local groups and individuals working to implement a sensible spay/neuter policy at our local dog shelter. Please consider pet overpopulation in Athens to be of great concern to many constituency members. The tremendous suffering of countless animals will only decrease when legislative action is taken.

Thank you to the Athens County Humane Society, Friends of the Shelter Dogs, and numerous individuals who are on the front lines of a losing battle. We are failing our "best friends" when healthy animals are killed and disposed of due to human negligence. Spay/neuter is the key to reducing the sad condition of so many companion animals.

A collaborative effort among commissioners, concerned residents and organizations that's focused on a spay/neuter policy at the Athens County Dog Shelter is gravely needed. Policy development, community awareness and collective responsibility will improve and save the lives of domestic animals depending on us to do what's right.
