Freda D. Swearingen, 89, of Athens, died Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains. Born April 10, 1923 in Athens she was the daughter of the late Freed Doty and Laura Brooks Doty Smedley and her step-father the late Arthur Smedley.
A 1941 graduate of Athens High School, she was a receptionist and secretary for Dr. T.H. Morgan and Dr. W.H. Allen, Jr. She was a volunteer for many years at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital and was a member of Christ Community Wesleyan Church.
Freda is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Michael Myers of Redlands, Calif.; her son, James L. Swearingen of Athens; three grandchildren - Ashley Myers of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Justin Myers of San Diego, Calif., and Andrew Myers of Running Springs, Calif.; a great-grandchild, Baron Myers; and her former husband, Fred Swearingen of Carlsbad, Calif.
Besides her parents and step-father she is preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Denny and a brother Donald Doty. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at West Union St. Cemetery, Athens with Pastor Denver Dodrill officiating. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.
