The Ohio University School of Music's Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band this Friday is presenting a special concert to commemorate the life and legacy of the late Ronald P. Socciarelli, director of bands from 1973 to 1992.
This performance at 8 p.m. Friday in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium is in conjunction with the OU Homecoming, "Better Than the Best Ever," a weekend-long celebration of Socciarelli, who passed away last February.
The Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will perform works that Socciarelli conducted during his tenure at OU. The School of Music Society of Alumni and Friends will present a posthumous award to the Socciarelli family in recognition of professor emeritus Socciarelli's long service to the School and university through his work with the concert bands and Marching 110.
Works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Warren Benson, Michael Daugherty, Howard Hanson and Alfred Reed will be performed, and a special reception hosted by the School of Music Society of Alumni and Friends will follow the concert.
The Wind Symphony, conducted by Andrew Trachsel and Symphonic Band, conducted by Richard Suk, are the two major concert bands in the OU School of Music. Both ensembles perform approximately six to eight concerts on campus each year.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information about this and other School of Music Events, visit www.finearts.ohio.edu.
