An Ohio University graduate and still local young woman was chosen by Playboy to bare all in its July/August issue as Miss August.
In an interview Sunday morning, Beth Williams says she still makes her home in Athens County – though for privacy reasons, she didn't get any more specific than that.
Williams, 25, is featured in the pictorial, "Country Strong: Saddle up with Miss August."
"Living out in the sticks, we have to create our own fun," she says in the article. "My friends and I love to go tubing down the Ohio River, drive around in four-wheelers, build campfires and go 'cabrewing' — what we call taking out a canoe and drinking beer."
(Cabrewing – and canoeing in general – is an increasingly popular pastime in this area, with canoe liveries operating out of Logan that float down the Hocking River.)
Attending from 2006-09, Williams graduated from OU with degrees in health-service administration and long-term-care administration, and has a master's degree in health care administration from Walden University, an online college based in Minneapolis.
She said she was born at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, and grew up in the country near Glouster and in Meigs County, and then went to her final two years of high school in Point Pleasant, W.Va., across the river from Gallipolis.
Williams also appeared in a summit shoot for Playboy's "Fresh Faces" website in 2008. When Williams was vying to be Playboy's 55th Anniversary Playmate, a past Athens NEWS story explained that she was flown to Georgia for the shoot, which featured solely first-time models.
"I was really nervous because I don't really let anybody see me naked," she said in that article.
On Sunday, she said that she doesn't intend to pose nude for any publication other than Playboy. "They're a very classy magazine… with very high standards," she said. "I wouldn't do that for any other company."
So far, she added, all of the feedback from friends and family has been positive. "There have been no negative aspects of it," she said.
Williams explained in Playboy that she's considering going back to school to earn her doctorate in order to teach. But for now, she's saving money from her modeling jobs (including for The Limited, Frontgate, and Bed, Bath & Beyond) to open a nursing home.
She told Playboy, "My mom and aunts are nurses, and my sister is a physical therapist. The idea would be to have all of them work there with me."
Williams said she makes it into Athens about three times a week, and her little brother attends school at OU. Asked about college bars that she has frequented, she said the main one's probably Broney's. While attending school, she had a job in the university's health services administration department, and also worked as a server at the Wild Horse Café in Pomeroy. At one point, she had an apartment upstairs in the building that houses Universitees t-shirt shop.
She said if anyone wants to follow her on Twitter, her handle is msbethwilliams. – Athens NEWS Editor Terry Smith contributed to this article.
