Gene Parker French, 88, of Athens, died Sunday afternoon, June 10, 2012 at his home. Born April 20, 1924 in Athens, he was the son of the late Emmett A. "Curly" French and Ora H. "Ma" Parker French.
He attended Albany High School and was employed at the Athens Co. Engineer's Office. He retired from Athens Building Materials Co., as an equipment operator and truck driver after 38 years of service. He also assisted in the operation of the Athens Building Materials sand and gravel plant at Nelsonville.
Gene and his family have been active in 4H for many years. He was a farmer and loved his horses. He raised and showed Belgium draft horses at the Athens Co. Fair for several years.
Gene is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marie A. Cain French. They would have celebrated their 70th Anniversary on Tuesday.
He is also survived by two sons, Larry (Monna) French of Albany and Max (Kay) French of Athens; seven grandchildren- Cheri French of Athens, Jason French of Athens, Chad Moore of Charlotte, N.C., Leeann (Steve) Baker of Gaffney, S.C., Shane (Michelle) Moore of Albany, Macie French of Albany and Mac Tabler of Albany; a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Stotts and several other great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, June Clark of Chauncey.
Besides his parents he is preceded in death by a daughter, Dawn Marie Moore; a grandson, Eric French; a granddaughter, Maggie Tabler; a sister, Valerie Thomas Yoho and two brothers, Richard and Lloyd French.
Funeral service will be conducted Friday 11:00 a.m. at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Rocky Sanborn officiating. Burial will be in New Marshfield Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 5-9 pm at the funeral home.
