To the Editor:
The Reader's Forum by Shawn Bennett (of Energy in Depth) in the Feb.8 Athens NEWS is filled with disinformation. One example is his claim that fracking operations were not exempted from the Clean Water Act.
Please note that these operations are specifically excluded from the Clean Water Act in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Sec.322 Hydraulic Fracturing.
Bennett's descriptions of the effects of these operations are not reflected in the experiences of communities where they have happened. Authorities have documented abundant accounts of water contamination, diseases, loss of property values, destroyed life styles and many other problems from these operations.
Bennett's Reader's Forum is filled with disinformation that likely will be countered by others. Disseminating disinformation is more accurately and less politely called lying, but is institutionalized into corporate policy and carried out as "business as usual" by representatives of companies to create the "necessary illusions" that support corporate agendas.
If Bennett believes what he wrote, then he best do some homework on the technology on which he is supposedly an expert. Of course, it is hard to understand something when receiving one's paycheck depends on one not understanding.
