To the Editor:
Archie Stanley should be re-elected as Athens County Engineer. Archie has been on the job for the last 32 years and during that time has done more to improve our county roads and bridges than any other engineer in the history of Athens County, or most other counties. I've come to know Archie very well over the years. I've never seen him say or do anything that I would consider wrong or out of line. He's probably one of the most straightforward, fair and honest people I know.
I think the fact that he is a veteran may have a little something to do with those characteristics. He was a second lieutenant in the Army and served in Vietnam as a reconnaissance and survey officer and operated as a forward observer out of a remote Special Forces outpost near Ben Het in the Central Highlands with the 7th Battalion of the 15th Field Artillery. He was in the battle of Firebase 6 in March of 1971 and then finished his military service as a Basic Training Officer at Fort Knox, Ky.
Archie has proven his commitment to the people of Athens County over the last 32 years. During that time, he has maintained complete fiscal responsibility for the Engineer's Department every single one of those 32 years.
As a veteran myself, I encourage all the other vets in Athens County to support and vote for Archie Stanley in the upcoming election. He's already proven that he is the right man for the job.
In all the years that Archie has been our county engineer, he hasn't had to go to the commissioners to ask for additional funds because of going over budget. Not once! He's even been able to have a carryover every year to take care of any emergencies that might arise.
Last year there was a substantial increase in road slips due to excess moisture. These slips were repaired, and 75 percent of the cost for those repairs were paid by FEMA because Archie took the time and made the effort to work with FEMA, which saved the county around $1.2 million.
Now is NOT the time for change in the Engineer's Department. Why would you want to change something that works, and works well? ARCHIE STANLEY WORKS.
That's why he keeps getting re-elected.

Didn't Stanley already get in trouble, years ago, for perverting the Stanley Tools logo for his Engineers race? Didn't see how it applied to him? Maybe it's rrelated to why he doesn't apply common courtesy in his job, as well? The engineers' office is a tremendous energy drain, built with no consideration for taking advantage of either of the state's 2 main solar installers, who happen to be located right here, in Athens. Now we read of hs departments abuse of overtime.
We recently had an ice storm, when salt would have been the most/best solution. How many of us (2 weeks later) are still sliding around on the road, especially at intersections and curves, because of all the river sand (round pebbles) still all over the road? Bye, Bye, Archie, enough is enough.
