To the Editor:
Don't look now but the United States is about ready to start another war in the Middle East, this time with Iran. In a sequel to our ill-fated war with Iraq, we are told there are weapons of mass destruction to be feared. Never mind that 16 different U.S. intelligence agencies have twice determined, in 2007 and again in 2010, that Iran has no nuclear weapons program. Never mind that Defense Secretary Leon Panetta a couple of weeks ago on national television admitted that Iran has no such program. Never mind that the United Nation's International Atomic Energy Agency has found no evidence of a nuclear weapons program.
With the Netanyahu government in Israel cheering us on, we're about to once again blunder into another military disaster. Funny thing about Israel, their defense minister, Ehud Barak, has also admitted that Iran has no such nuclear weapons program.
So what they are saying is a war is needed to destroy a nuclear weapons program that everyone agrees does not exist. Mass insanity reigns in Washington and Tel Aviv.
A war with Iran will be exponentially more damaging to our country than both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined. Russia has made it crystal clear that they will not stand by idly and watch it happen. Many security experts around the world believe such a war might very well escalate into a world war. If America and Israel attack, Iran has promised to close the Straits of Hormuz, the most important shipping route for world petroleum supplies. One result would be a steep climb in gas prices grinding our struggling economy to a halt.
Feb. 4 is a national day of protest demanding that our leaders halt such insane plans. Please make your voices heard. Our country is already war-weary and ready for peace. It is time for the United States to spend its money not on more war but on social and job creation programs in order to help the struggling American people for whom life grows more difficult every day.
