On Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the city of Athens will hold a Town Hall Meeting at the Athens Community Center to solicit citizen input to help determine the top local priorities for the year and how concerns can be addressed.
Following a brief update by the mayor, a 90-minute "open microphone" session will allow citizens to discuss local issues, indicate their top priorities, and encourage Athens' diverse community members to dialogue with each other, according to a news release.
At a Town Hall Meeting in June, the city will provide updates on what has been done to address the top concerns discussed at the February meeting.
To solicit as many viewpoints as possible, each speaker will be given three minutes to make comments. To also save time, according to the release, speakers will be encouraged to discuss concerns and possible solutions without requiring an immediate response from the mayor and other city officials present. Those seeking a response from the city are encouraged to attend the June Town Hall Meeting, during which the city will discuss what steps it has taken on the top issues discussed on Feb. 7.
According to the release, the purpose of this Town Hall Meeting is to increase shared governance and improve the accountability of city government. The pairing of a Winter Town Hall Meeting soliciting input and a June Town Hall Meeting reporting results is intended to be a permanent feature of Athens Town Hall Meetings in future years.
The Town Hall Meetings are sponsored by the city of Athens and the Athens Chapter of the League of Women Voters.
