Term limits aren’t as important an issue as $$ and lobbying reform

To the Editor:

I read Athens NEWS Editor Terry Smith's Jan. 26 "Wearing Thin" column on term limits with great interest. Mr. Smith fails to recognize that the influx of cash into our elections renders the "choice" of candidates an illusion. While he makes fine points, the only way to get rid of term limits would be to publicly finance all campaigns so that it was a truly level playing field. Moreover, if lobbyists taking advantage of elected officials is a problem, then the solution is lobbying reform, not tinkering with one of the few checks left on the entrenchment of power in our democracy.
