At about 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday), Ohio University Police issued a crime alert that an "armed and dangerous" man had been spotted near campus earlier today. At 8:30 p.m., OU Police issued an update, stating that Athens and OU police were continuing their search.
The man, according to OU Police, was wanted in connection with the robbery Wednesday of a People's bank in Carroll, Ohio, in Fairfield County.
The report said that the man, Billy J. Caudill, "is considered armed and dangerous." He was described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 195 pounds, and with hazel eyes, clean shaven and a shaved head.
His last known location, the report said, was in the vicinity of Union and Shafer streets in Athens. People were advised to avoid the area, not to walk alone, and to report suspicious activity to the police immediately.
At the time of the report, Ohio University Police Department had called in extra officers who were on patrol in the area. The university has alerted students, staff and faculty via text messages and email.
In the updated report, OU Police said the public should continue "to use caution in going about their activities but police do not believe it's necessary for people to lock themselves in or shelter in place."
One student said that during an English class at about five minutes till 7 p.m., every student received the text at the same time, and the professor allowed them to look and see what was going on.
As of 8 p.m., no followup reports had been issued by the OU Police.
