To the Editor:
I have been away from my home for a couple of weeks and would like to convey my thanks to Charlie Kincade, my sister and family for checking on things. I want to thank all my neighbors for their calls, notes and cards of support for a fast recovery.
I have noticed several news items in reviewing old newspapers, etc., that merit mentioning.
1) Family values enthusiast Sarah Palin has endorsed Newt Ginrich for president (thats family values? I dont think so).
2) The county highway department announced previously that they were going to make South Canaan No. 24 road way safer. They mowed the right-of-way but didnt remove the several large dead trees standing on the berm. Thats safety?
3) A retired supervisor from the Athens County Emergency response system is going to run for county commissioner. Hope he can bring some common sense to that office; however, I am at a loss as to why he permitted the house numbers at 5903 and 5901 Radford Road to remain out of sequence. These locations are within 100 yards of his house. There may be other instances throughout the county but we are dealing with emergencies here and anything less than perfection should not be tolerated.
4) Looks like some of the little dynasties that prevail in the county could be eliminated in the not-too-distant future.
5) Obama took 77 percent of my modest cost of living in 2011, and his other schemes are costing us senior citizens more than we can afford. This reduction in taxes that he promotes is nothing more than you paying less in Social Security tax now and receiving less when you retire.
