To the Editor:
I'm writing in response to the public outcry surrounding Mrs. Chandler Glover's decision to sell her business (BellaVino) and her property that contained the business. I feel that everyone in this community who has expressed any poor opinions of Mrs Chandler Glover's decision are overstepping their bounds. She owns the property, and she has a right to do with her property as she sees fit.
I could understand if she were trying circumvent some already in place statute that acknowledged the historical significance of this building. The fact is that when she bought the building, that wasn't the case. It wouldn't be fair to force her to consider this in the sale of this property.
The fact that Mrs. Chandler Glover is being placed in a situation where she is compelled to defend herself is utterly absurd. She owes no one an explanation for how she makes her financial decisions or for what she does with HER PROPERTY. Anyone who questions this should go find themselves a nice gated community to move to where it is commonplace to meddle in others' affairs.
Mrs. Chandler Glover and her family are upstanding members of Athens, and I am proud to have them as members of this community. I would like to apologize on behalf of all those who have made her feel compelled to defend herself, but I prefer to keep as much distance between myself and those folks as possible. You should all do it yourselves because you owe it to her. The Historical Society is the entity that has dropped the ball here. Get after them and leave the upstanding citizens of our community alone!
