MUSIC:

• Open acoustic jam night. Thursdays at the Nelsonville Eagles Lodge bar.

• Musicians Open Stage. Every Thursday at Donkey Coffee from 9 p.m. to midnight.

• Maplewood Tavern holds an open stage every Thursday night at 9.

Every Thursday evening Zach Parkman & Jeremy Wright will be performing an acoustic set at Casa Lopez Mexican restaurant at 1017 E. State St. from 6-9 p.m.

• Dave Rave returns to the Red Brick Bullpen with a new party called B-Funk's BASSment. 10 p.m., 18 , $3 cover for under 21, free for 21 .  This week's DJ lineup includes DJ B-Funk, DJ Time Traveler, DJ AA and DJ Freedie D

ART:

"Another Language Altogether: Posters Celebrating the Poems of Wendy McVicker." Stuart's Opera House Gallery 1879. Through Jan. 17.

• The 2012 Ohio University School of Art Faculty Exhibition, part of the College of Fine Arts 75th anniversary. An opening reception is Jan. 6 from 6-8 p.m. Kennedy Museum of Art, OU. The exhibit runs through April 15.

On exhibit at the Athens Public Library: "What to My Wondering Eyes Should Appear?" Photographs by Patricia Lauchman in the circulation area and "Gourd-geous Gourds" by Carrie Rogers, Renee' Fossett and Celia Wetzel (The Southeast Ohio Gourd Patch) in the display cases through the month of January.

A Civil War artillery shell display is at the Athens Historical Society and Museum in conjunction with the sesquicentennial of the war. It will run until June 2012.

Alumni and current student Skype interviews for the OU College of Fine Arts' 75th anniversary. Interviews will be used for anniversary events, School of Art website and curriculum. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Feb. 2. Sign up at http://www.finearts.ohio.edu/art/75thAnniversary.htm.

• Place, space, and composition: Recent Works by Mame Redwood at Art Apocalypse Now, 16 W. Union St., Athens, through Jan. 28.

Supper: Weekly free supper sponsored by UCM: Center for Spiritual Growth and Social Justice. 5:30 p.m. at UCM, 18 N. College St. Open to everyone, no questions asked. 593-7301. (Volunteers are needed, and donations are welcome with advance notice.)

Free Food: The Nelsonville Community Center provides a free breakfast to anyone under 18 Monday through Friday at 9 a.m.

Comedy: Weekly show at The Athens Pyramids, "Comedy in the Round." Cuz Finnegan will act as the show host. 9 p.m. and free.

Childhood Immunizations: Every Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1-5:30 p.m. in Parks Hall room 014, OU. OU-COM Community Health Programs' Childhood Immunization Program. Free to all area children from birth through 18. Bring your child's previous shot records. 1-800-844-2654.

Free screenings: The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) will provide free breast health education and breast cancer screenings for uninsured and underinsured women ages 40 to 49 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Heritage Community Clinic in Grosvenor West Hall on the West Green of the Ohio University campus.  Appointments are required and can be scheduled by calling toll free at 1-800-844-2654 or 740-593-2432.

Potluck lunch: AFAN Athens Friends and Newcomers will have a potluck luncheon at Christ of King Church, celebrating their 43rd birthday. The special event for the month will be lunch at Abrio's and an afternoon movie.

Film: "The PHD Movie," a humorous film about the trials and tribulations of earning a graduate degree, will be screened for free at 7 and 9 p.m. at Ohio University's Memorial Auditorium. For more information, visit www.ohio.edu/graduate/phdmovie.cfm.

Bloodmobile: 8 p.m. at Ohio University Tiffin Hall and 2-8 p.m. at Ohio University Front Four.  Call 1-800-733-2767 for an appointment. Also, from 2-7 p.m. at the Bethel Worship Center in Tuppers Plains. Local businesses have donated door prizes for this particular annual blood drive.

Open house: Community members are invited to gather and celebrate Kate McGuckin's 26 years of service to My Sister's Place, the shelter for victims of domestic violence serving Athens, Hocking, and Vinton Counties. An open house will be held at the Dairy Barn Arts Center and light refreshments will be served from 4-6 p.m.

Celebration: MLK Jr. Celebration of Creativity. Creativity showcase from 6-7 p.m. with kids art reception from 7-9 p.m. The Celebration of Creativity is open to students in grades K–12 surrounding OU regional campuses and Athens County schools. In honor of Dr. King's legacy, participants will create original art work while incorporating this year's MLK Jr. theme: "The dream lives on in you: service, community, teaching." Benefit breakfast: The Athens County Habitat for Humanity's Faith Build Coalition and the Applebee's Restaurant in Athens are partnering for a benefit breakfast at the restaurant from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. ACAA Rally: Athens County Animal Advocates (ACAA) will be holding an "Occu-Puppy" protest rally at 10 a.m. on East State Street (near Friendly Paws Pet Supplies & Grooming.) ACAA will be protesting the use of the gas chamber to kill dogs at the Athens County Dog Shelter.

Community service: Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An opportunity for campus and community participants to volunteer in service projects throughout Athens County. Volunteers will convene at Walter Hall Room 145 at 4 p.m. to reflect on their day of service. Good Works 10th Annual Walk for the Homeless: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event begins and ends at First United Methodist Church on College St. in uptown Athens. Interactive Exhibit: The Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery presents "Wise About Eyes," an interactive exhibit that explores the eye – how do eyes see?, how can we protect our eyes?, and how do optical illusions work? 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Special program: 11 a.m.: "All About Eyes," presented by OU medical students. MUSIC:

Hocking College music professor George Hertzel, a working studio and live musician for more than 25 years, is performing at 9:30 p.m. every Sunday at Casa Cantina. His solo shows will include "a stage with keyboard instruments everywhere." Free.

• Dave Rave is bringing the DUB101 college dubstep tour back to Athens featuring DJs 2Rip, Eric Evasion, Easty, Pro Bono and Technician. The Union.

Community Summit: ComCorps, a local division of AmericCorps, is hosting "Ending Poverty: A Community Summit." Attendees will participate in roundtable discussions on what the Athens County community is doing to end poverty. 2-4 p.m. at the Athens Community Center. The public is invited to come share their ideas, acquire resources, and develop goals to improve the quality of life for all residents of Athens County.

Silent March and Celebratory Brunch: 12th annual event in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Silent march starts at Galbreath Chapel at 10 a.m., with the brunch starting at 11 a.m. in Baker Center Ballroom, OU. Tickets for the brunch can be purchased through the Multicultural Center, 205 Baker Center, 593-4027.
