Contrary to rumor, a gourmet hot-dog emporium in uptown Athens is not "moving" to a new location. The good news for local frankfurter lovers, however, is that O'Betty's Red Hot! Dogs & Sausages is opening a second location, on the other side of uptown.
The first O'Betty's location has been at 15 W. State St. for the past nine years, and will continue to serve gourmet hot dogs, fries and other food out of that site. The second O'Betty's, due to open on Monday, Jan. 2, will be located at 30 W. Union St., on the corner of Union and South Congress, across from Bromley Hall.
In a news release, Bob Satmary, self-described as a "local restaurateur/entrepreneur," said the new restaurant will create 15 jobs in Athens, and "further leverage (the) local agricultural and restaurant supply chain, integrating community support between local producers and restaurant."
Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl is scheduled to formally cut the ribbon for the new O'Betty's outlet on Thursday.
Satmary said that while the new outlet will "mimic" the menu at the original O'Betty's, "with the expanded square footage, look for some expansion of the menu over time." There also will be an expanded seating area, he said.
"We are committed to maintaining and expanding the quality of O'Betty's experience," Satmary said in the release.
I'm going to miss Campus Garden.
