Holiday help for low-income families

Holiday assistance for low-income Athens County households.

Salvation Army

Provides seasonal assistance and gifts to low-income families and children.

Provides donated Christmas toys for low-income families with children.

Bring photo ID, proof of income and Social Security Numbers for all household members. Call for additional info. Assistance may be requested from EITHER Salvation Army or Athens County Children Services, but not BOTH.

Faith Believers Ministry:

Provides special holiday food boxes for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Call to apply or apply at scheduled food distribution.

Faith Believers Ministry accepts donations of food and clothing; call to arrange a drop-off. Donations by check may be mailed to the above address and made out to "Feed My Sheep Food Pantry." Paypal donations online at

Nelsonville City Government:

Provides home-delivered Christmas food baskets to low-income residents of the Nelsonville-York area.

Apply in person at the Nelsonville Fire Department.

Holiday giving opportunities in Athens County

Big Brothers Big Sisters:

Accepts Christmas gift donations for children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters. A Christmas tree inside Walmart lists children's needs; purchase items and drop-off at Customer Service within Walmart, or to the Big Brothers Big Sisters office. Teen-friendly gifts are especially needed, including teen clothing. Also accepts donations of wrapping paper, tape, and other wrapping material.

Athens County Children Services

Accepts Christmas toys for low-income families with children. A Christmas tree located in The Market on State mall lists children's needs.  People can pick an ornament from the tree for a specific child, purchase gifts and leave them in the Present Return Box, drop off at Athens County Children Services or at Maurice's inside The Market on State.

Risen Redeemer Full Gospel Church

Accepts Christmas gift donations for area children. Christmas trees decorated with lists of children's needs are located in First National Bank, Home Savings and Loan, and People's Bank in Nelsonville. Gifts may be dropped off at bank locations; banks also accept financial donations to purchase gifts for children.

Appalachian Community Visiting Nurses Association, Hospice and Health Services

Accepts food box donations with non-perishable goods and fresh food with long shelf lives for holiday season food basket donations for clients.

Accepts Christmas donations to provide low-income children with a toy, and possibly clothing and additional goods. Donations of goods or money are both accepted.

Accepts donations of new toys and food for Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, as well as monetary donations (holiday donations deadline is Dec 10). Also, call to volunteer as a bell ringer for the 2011 Red Kettle Campaign!
