With all Athens County precincts reporting (and 31 percent turnout of registered voters), following are the unofficial results from Tuesday's general election. We'll have reporting, analysis and interviews in our print edition on Thursday and posted here Wednesday.

Athens Mayor

Paul Wiehl (D) 71 percent , 2,385 votes

Randy Morris (R) 29 percent, 972 votes

Athens Third Ward City Council (only contested council race)

Michele Papai (D) 69.44 percent, 568 votes

R.J. Sumney (I) 30.56 percent, 250 votes

Athens Township Trustee

Ted Linscott 64.36 percent, 2,561 votes

David Ratliff 35.64 percent, 1,418 votes

State Issue 1 (judges' retirement age)

No 64.87 percent, 9,632 votes

Yes 35.13 percent, 5,217 votes

State Issue 2 (S.B. 5 collective bargaining)

No 80.35 percent, 12,557 votes

Yes 19.65 percent, 3,070 votes

State Issue 3 (symbolic rejection of key part of Obama health-care law)

Yes 52.76 percent, 7,959 votes

No 47.24 percent, 7,126 votes

The Athens County results basically mimicked the statewide fates of the three state issues, though with different proportions of yes and no votes.

As of around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Ohio Secretary of State's website, state Issue 2 -- the measure to affirm as law Senate Bill 5, which restricts the collective-bargaining rights of public-sector unions -- was headed for a major defeat statewide, with the vote running close to 61/39 against it.

State Issue 3 -- a measure to amend the state constitution to say that no law or rule can force anyone to obtain health insurance or otherwise take part in the health-care system -- was passing handily Tuesday night, by about a 66/34 ratio.

State Issue 1, a measure to up the mandatory retirement age of judges, was losing statewide by about the same margin as Issue 2 -- 62/38 against -- as of about 10:30 p.m.

Athens Co. Issue 15 (seniors levy)

Yes 71.45 percent, 10,898 votes

No 28.55 percent, 4,354 votes

Athens Co. Issue 16 (mental health and addiction levy)

Yes 62.54 percent, 9,513 votes

No 37.46 percent, 5,968 votes

The Athens County election results were not available on the Board of Elections website as of 10:30 p.m.

This town yet again champions mediocrity in the way other champion excellence.  Mark my words, his incompetence will end up hurting this town and its residents.  Sad and pathetic.

The votes were for the "D" under his name and nothing more.  Frankly, if they had voted for an actual "D" on a stick that they placed behind the mayor's desk we would probably be in better shape.

Shame on you.  Shame.

Wrong, Hazz.

Hazz,

You are so wrong. Don't you embarrass yourself?

This is a small town, and most of us know Paul, and fully support his work. Have you ever tried to have a discussion w/ Paul? As long as you start from a position of respect you will receive that, in kind, and perhaps, grow from the experience. Until then, please, control your whine.

It's disgraceful.  It's uninformed voting.

This is not whining.  This is a warning.  You will get the incompetence you endorse.  That's all.

Later, when you hear "I told you so".  Oh, wait, you won't hear that.  You don't hear anything.  Common sense?  No.  Reality?  No.  Truth?  No.

It is you who should be embarassed.  And, I dare say--you will will feel it eventually.

No, it's definitely whining. Spit out the sour grapes before trying to make an informed comment.
