To the Editor:
Randy Morris' wealth of experience in academia, the military, leadership, training and business development makes him more than qualified to run the city of Athens. That is why I was surprised that The Athens NEWS endorsed the incumbent for another term as Athens' mayor.
While the newspaper's endorsement seems rather lukewarm, Randy Morris' co-workers' support has been far more enthusiastic. Like several other letter writers, I worked with Randy at the National Business Incubation Association. During that time, I learned a great deal from him about character and leadership. I also learned that Randy is an idealist. He is serious about making Athens a better place to live and work, and knows how to inspire others to improve the quality of life for all Athenians.
At work, Randy expresses his opinions in a matter-of-fact, open and honest manner, the same way he responded to questions at a debate between the two candidates several weeks ago. His ideas and suggestions are practical, sensible and well thought out. He treats everyone with respect and is willing to listen intently and discuss various points of view.
Randy has other positive qualities including a great sense of humor. At work he often made us laugh, and he was good-natured about the teasing he received in return.
I realize that many people here are afraid to vote for a Republican. On the state and national level, I agree with them. But locally, people have a chance to get to know a candidate personally, especially in a work situation. On Nov. 8, Athenians have the opportunity to vote for Randy Morris, a person with integrity who knows how to engage people in the process of working together for the good of all.
