Intelliwave has announced that it will spend over $1 million over the next 12 months in order to bring broadband Internet access to unserved homes in parts of eastern and southern Athens County. They launched the service for the first smaller area earlier this week.
Intelliwave, based in Athens, won a $2.3 million loan and grant award through the U.S. Department of Agriculture broadband stimulus program in 2010, according to a press release.
The company launched the new broadband service from a tower near Guysville earlier this week.
"This new Guysville site will provide much-needed broadband access to over 500 previously unserved homes and businesses in the Guysville/Stewart/Canaanville area," the Intelliwave release stated.
Over the next 12 months the company plans to roll out service in other targeted unserved areas in Athens County.
Intelliwave subscribers in this area, the release said, will be able to do all the things that broadband makes possible including doing online school work, online banking, job searches or even running a business.
"They will also be able to use their service for entertainment purposes," it said. "They can watch Netflix, Hulu or YouTube. All of these activities were impossible for them using their antiquated dial-up or satellite Internet service."
Intelliwave, the release said, offers unlimited service, meaning that customers can use the service as much as they like, whenever they like for one flat monthly fee.
