Local man jailed after stick-up

A 25-year-old Athens man is in jail after he allegedly stole money and cigarettes at knifepoint from the Richland Avenue Speedway gas/convenience store early Friday morning.

Brian K. Hoffman faces a charge of aggravated robbery in connection with the incident.

According to an Athens Police report, APD responded to a call from Speedway around 12:20 a.m. in reference to an aggravated robbery.

Officers were given a description of the suspect, and told he had left on foot. Witnesses said the man had brandished a knife and demanded the clerk give him cartons of cigarettes and the money in the register.

Police searched the area, allegedly found Hoffman at the top of Carriage Hill Drive, and apprehended him without incident, the report said.  The clerk at Speedway was not injured during the incident.

Ohio University Police, the Athens County Sheriff's Office, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted in catching Hoffman, the report said.
