Sheriff just part of the local good ol' boy system; let's replace him
To the Editor:
When Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly ran last time, I voted for him. I shook his hand and told him how happy I was that he was in office. But I am still not his Facebook buddy and doubt I ever will be. My feelings have changed and I think it's time for a new sheriff in town.
With Mr. Kelly's election came just some more of the "Old Boy's Club" that has been in our local sheriff's office as long as I can remember. Pat each other on the back and keep things nice, quiet and smooth running, like even if it is sometimes done improperly or illegally.

The only reason Mr. Kelly has so many Facebook followers is so some of them can keep an eye on what the heck is going on around here. Many people are scared to say what they really believe and things are discussed in hushed whispers.
Why? Because you will be in trouble if you get on the wrong person's radar in this town, and many of you who are reading this know it to be absolute truth. Is this freedom? Is anyone else sick of the way things are run in this town?
Unless you know someone or are wealthy, you don't count for much around here. Chances are you or some of your family are or have been recycled over and over again in this county's legal system.
Change is possible! Please vote for a chance at a well-run sheriff's office in the 2012 election, and together we can improve the quality of life for everyone in Athens County!

If people just followed the law, they wouldn;t hav to worry bou being on the lgal systems radar.
I am as far from rich or powerful as it gets, nd yet manage to not cycle through the courts.

Anybody who’s followed the last few Sheriff elections in Athens knows that Kelly didn’t receive any inside help in getting elected to Sheriff of this county. He worked hard and earned his votes. In my opinion (with over 40 years in Athens), I haven’t seen a better and harder working Sheriff than Kelly. He has done a better than outstanding job as Sheriff – both for the community and for the Sheriff’s department. You can’t please everyone – nor should we expect him to. But he has moved things in the right direction and has dramatically improved policing in Athens County. He has also greatly improved the operations and administration (effectiveness and efficiencies) of the Sheriff’s Office.
