Family can be a person’s solace and support, or the thing that drags him down and tears him apart. Take a look inside one family’s secrets, lies and greed with the Athenian Berean Community Players’ production of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” by Tennessee Williams.

The classic drama is being performed at Stuart’s Opera House from Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” is one of the most critically acclaimed stage shows in American history. This Pulitzer-winning drama has long been hailed as one of theater’s masterpieces, and offers actors the chance to take on challenging, complex roles.

According to the release, the play examines the unraveling relationships of the members of the Pollitt family as they gather for a birthday celebration at the plantation home of Big Daddy (played by Joe Balding) and Big Mama (Karen Chan). The family tries to keep Big Daddy’s ailing health a secret from him, meanwhile vying for his inheritance. Elder son Gooper (Ken Bowald) and his wife, Mae (Shelly Riggs), attempt to gain control of the family fortune, while younger son Brick (Bob Rymer) is more concerned with nursing his growing alcoholism and grief over his recently dead best friend.

Meanwhile Brick’s wife, Maggie “The Cat” (Heidi Wilhelm), tries to shake him from his sorrow for fear that they will be cut out of the inheritance altogether. Rounding out the cast of characters are Reverend Tooker (Matt Hull), Dr. Baugh (Ron Luce), Gooper and Mae’s children (Collin Hull, Courtney Hull, Talon Morris, Shifra Narasimhan and Irie Green), and servants (Robin Barnes, Celeste Parsons, Sandy Russell and Kaylla Steadman).

“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” is directed by Ron Luce with assistant direction by Cecilia Rinaldi. The set was designed by Celeste Parsons. Suzanne Ragg serves as stage manager. Lighting was designed by Michael Weiser, sound by Jim Parsons, and costumes by Nellie Werger. Ardelle Donohue serves as prop manager.

This production marks the first time a complete ABC Players’ production will be taken on the road, according to the news release. After closing in Nelsonville, the cast and crew will head to the Ariel Theatre in Gallipolis for two more performances on March 18 and 19 at 8 p.m. Visit http://www.arieltheatre.org or call 740-466-ARTS for more information on these performances.

“Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” contains adult themes, so discretion should be used in attendance. This production is sponsored by Rocky Outdoor Gear Store. Call Stuart’s Opera House at 740-753-1924 to reserve tickets or purchase them at the door. Tickets also can be ordered online at http://www.stuartsoperahouse.org.
