What traits in a man turn you off more than any other?

"Men vary, just like women. Some are chauvinists or are proud of ignoring women, while others are not. I am glad to have men friends who generally treat women, including me, well (i.e. like sisters and rational human beings). I personally despise the "beefcake" of grossly over-muscled men. I also think shaved heads, buzz cuts or mohawks are bad-looking. Men (or women) who glorify violence and speeding are gross. Too many films have featured (Clint Eastwood in the 1970s was a prime example) victimizing of men by other men and bad women. Then the victim is shown as 'justified' in exacting violent revenge."

Lois D. Whealey, 78, a citizen activist/independent humanities scholar from Athens

"Ha, ha, this is a great question."
--
Laleh Honar, 22, a student from Athens

"Condescension, laziness and abusiveness."
--
Erin Hyman, 28, an office manager/delivery driver from Athens

"Arrogance. Actually, unfounded arrogance."
--
Catherine Maynard, 22, graduate student at Nelsonville

"Laziness and arrogance. Easygoing and confident are fine, but laziness and arrogance? No thanks."
--
Natalie Knoth, 21, a student/journalism major from Athens

"Materialism."
--
Amanda Sharrai, 33, a community organizer from Athens

"I hate a man who thinks that he can be in charge all of the time or that he is smarter simply by virtue of that one appendage. I hate a man who is self-serving and smarmy as well."
--
Amie Nogrady, 42, a freelance writer from Glouster

"Rudeness is the worst trait I can think of. I've seen guys treat my friends like crap making fun of everything from weight to appearance to personal quirks to medical problems. Not all guys are like that, but a surprising number don't quite have that internal censor turned on. The fact that a select few can't get it through their heads that calling a woman fat, ugly or stupid upsets me to no end. Common decency and respect for all people is a trait I admire in everyone."
--
Caitlin Seida, 21, a freelance writer from Nelsonville

"Dishonesty with himself and others."
--
Jennifer Cooper, 42, with a non-profit from Stewart

"Ignorance and small-mindedness."
--
Kari Lowery, 18, a student from Athens

"Ignorance, stupidity, intolerance, slovenliness."
--
Anne Whitman, 60, an adjunct instructor from Athens

"Men who are stereotypical of women, believing that our place is to bear children and stay at home. Those that fail to recognize talents of young women because they can't see past their own false sense of reality in recognizing that women are now a great contributor to the economy and business world."
--
Tomma Shuler, 37, in health-care management from Athens

"For me, the worst thing a guy can do is to be completely unavailable and vanish. I know this sounds crazy and out there, but it has happened to me. I hate guys that are really wonderful, upfront and tell you everything you want to hear. After a little time goes by, they stop calling and stop coming over. I hate to admit it but this has happened to me more than once. It is ridiculous. Why can't a guy call his girlfriend daily? I don't feel as though that is asking too much."
--
Kate, Nelsonville, 24, a cook/dietary aide from Nelsonville

"Dishonesty, insecurity, laziness, selfishness"
--
Missy Brown, 40, an RN Clinical Manager from The Plains

"Racism, sexism, no sense of humor."
--
Amber Skorpenske, 20, a student from Pittsburgh

"Really? And you might print this no way..."
--
Jessie Daniel, 38, a realtor from Glouster

"Jealousy and selfishness."
--
Billie Handa, 29, Director of Development, NBIA, from Nelsonville

"Possessiveness, anger, vulgarity,"
--
Daniella Limoli, 20, a student from Athens

"The same traits that would lead me to not want to befriend a woman: cruelty, bigotry, crude behavior, a feeling of entitlement, whining, being bored with life, not reading, littering, screaming, swearing."
--
Janice Phelps Williams, 54, a publisher, writer, illustrator from Athens

"Cockiness! When a man thinks he is 'somebody.' To me everybody has the same opportunity on this campus even if we came from different backgrounds we are all in the same place now so we shouldn't act better than anyone. Cockiness has got to go, gentlemen!!"
--
Shana Snyder, 22, graduate student/substitute teacher from Athens

"Rudeness, disrespect, and a lack of awareness of the world beyond themselves are traits that instantly repel me from someone. A lack of personal hygiene would be another one. Now, someone who is confident, intelligent, has good manners, a sense of humor, and a kind heart, that is a different story!"
--
Marisa Welch, 23, a sales associate and student library assistant from Athens

"The worst traits in a man are: a big ego, having firm beliefs in racist/sexist/bigoted ideas, or just being a downright jerk. These are the types of men that truly make me sick to my stomach and give me no hope for the male gender sorry good guys, I know you're out there, but there just seem to be too few of you. :("
--
Ellen Lambert, 27, a full-time aunt from Albany

"The lack of a sense of humor and fun."
--
Alexa Ross, Nelsonville, 63, a retired motel manager/actress from Nelsonville

"A man who is controlling and unwilling to allow a woman the ability to think for herself and make decisions."
--
Tabitha Bond, 40, a business owner from Coolville

"Pompousness. No sense of humor. Disrespect for women as people."
--
Debbie Williams, 60, a paralegal from Millfield

"Lies, dishonesty, alcoholic"
--
Darcie Hartley, 36, office assistant -- ABH, from Albany
