ART:

Selections from the Permanent Collections. This exhibition juxtaposes pieces from Kennedy Museum's permanent collections including weavings, prints, paintings, ceramics and African art. Kennedy Museum of Art, OU.

"The First American West: Frontier and Freedom in Athens County." This hands-on exhibit examines the extraordinary journey of the early settlers to southeast Ohio. Athens County Historical Society & Museum, North Court Street, Athens.

Art installation "Buttress," by DeWitt Godfrey. Through May 2011 at the Kennedy Museum of Art, OU.

The challenging world of artist Harvey Breverman, which offers a wealth of unpredictable and captivating imagery, will be featured at OU's Kennedy Museum of Art through Jan. 16, 2011.

Starbrick Cooperative Gallery presents "Two Potters and a Painter. Sue Hazen and Maryann Limmer, ceramic artists, and Margaret McGee, a painter, work together to express their thoughts on the South African Ndebele Indian Art. Exhibit runs through March 20.

Casa Nueva is showing the art of Jim Korpi and Ross Mantle, in a show called "Confluence," featuring photographs of the Ohio River Valley and the Monongahela River Valley. Through Oct. 18.

"Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals" by photographer Christopher Payne. Kennedy Museum of Art. Through Jan. 2.

Ohio University Ceramics Invitational 2010. Ceramics exhibition organized to highlight wood-fired ceramics. Trisolini Gallery, OU. Through Oct. 9.

Burhan Dogancay: Urban Walls. Fascinated by urban walls, Turkish born artist Burhan Dogancay, captures the markings left by people as his subject matter. Ohio University Art Gallery. Through Nov. 20.

In Memory of Tim, a memorial show for our late friend, Tim Seewer. Also, introducing the underground work from some of Starbrick Clay's newest members: Wanda Pare', Lyda Gunter, Lissa Jollick, Sue Roth, Dustin Lee, Margie Bledsoe Jim Shirey, and Jeremy Wright. "Appalachia!" A photography exhibition that offers the opportunity for photographers to showcase their work and documentary pictures of Appalachia. The Dairy Barn, Athens. Through Nov. 21.

"Origami On Hand" at The Paper Circle in Nelsonville runs run through November. Works by international artist/author Tomoko Fuse of Japan, Robert J. Lang of the U.S. and David and Assia Brill of Great Britain. In addition to these professional artists are works by Charles "doc" Santee of Illinois and local artists including rising star Jon Tucker, Dr. Michael Weinstein and a large work by the students of professor Susan Melsop at Ohio State University.

Latina heritage museum exhibit from noon to 5 p.m. on Baker Center's second floor, featuring more than 100 artifacts, photos, biographies and video documents. Part of Hispanic Heritage month, from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. For more info call 597-2110.

"Beyond First Impressions: Prints of Harvey Breverman" at Kennedy Museum of Art. Breverman will speak tonight at 5 p.m., with a reception following from 6-8 p.m. Through Jan. 16. (Work has been displayed since July 9.)

Farming: High-school students and advisors partake in about nine forestry-related activities, including tree identification and timber cruising, for the Future Farmers of America State Competition. Orientation begins at 7 a.m. at JL195 at Hocking College.

Walks: The Ohio Volkssport Assocation and the Bulls Run Ramblers of Middletown host a weekend of walking across Vinton, Gallia, Meigs and Athens counties. A volksmarch is about 6.2 miles, but 3-mile trails are also available for each event. In Athens, the Saturday starting point is the Athens Community Center, 701 E. Solar Tour: Green Energy Ohio's Southeast Ohio Solar tour. 1-5 p.m., with attendees having the option of taking a guided vehicle tour throughout Athens County, a guided walking tour of the East Side of Athens, or creating their own tour from a list of sites posted on the event's website. Registration will take place inside the Community Center from 12:30-1 p.m. Vans will be provided by Green Energy Ohio and Third Sun Solar, and participants are encouraged to ride for free. If the vans fill up, personal cars may follow. Leaf Drop-Off Day: First-ever event take place at the Athens Community Center in conjunction with the Athens Chamber of Commerce's annual Shred Day. Purely American, an Athens based specialty foods company, will be accepting leaves and other yard waste from 9 a.m. to noon. Acceptable yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, hedge trimmings, garden waste and bundled twigs. Materials must be packed in clear plastic or (ideally) compostable yard waste type paper bags and must weight no more than 30 pounds. For more information, contact Ray Leard at 592-3800.
