Video of tornado that was spotted south of Nelsonville

This video was provided by Tom Hanlon of New Marshfield, an occasional storm-chaser. Below is his narrative of the experience, along with the video itself.

Hometown chases are a bit of a challenge. For one thing you want to make sure everyone you know is safe, and you hope that large pine trees that you meant to remove because they are too close to your house have not fallen while you are out. Not to mention that roads are often in the valleys and vision is obscured by trees.

Thursday I was able to capture video of the tornado south of Nelsonville. This footage was taken at 6:55 p.m. on State Route 691 just north of the intersection with Poston Road. Tom Sweet and I witnessed the tornado at this location and then attempted to follow it east. Trees across the road on Poston Road prevented us from following it into The Plains and further east into Athens.

After losing what may have been the main tornado producer we headed south to New Marshfield and tried to chase the storm there as well. We followed it east into Athens until sunset, by then the stronger storm of that system was south in the Coolville area. Not willing to chase after dark we headed home.
