What's happening

Music, Arts and Community Events in the Athens County area this week. (8/12 - 8/18)

Thursday

MUSIC:

• Open acoustic jam  night. Thursdays at the Nelsonville Eagles Lodge bar.

• Open stage at Donkey  Coffee.

• Steve Zarate  plays from 9-10:30 p.m. in OU Baker Center’s Front Room, as part of three weeks  of pre-college weeknight performances.

• Cantina Karaoke with The Constant Gardener.  Free show. Casa Cantina.

• Stuart’s Opera House presents bluesman Guy  Davis for its free Summer Concert Series in the parking lot across from the  Opera House. If it rains, the show moves into the building. 7 p.m. Beer is  available at a vending booth at the show.

• The Girls at Dawn, The Holly Grahams and  The Valley Boys. The Union.

ART:

Selections from the  Permanent Collections. This exhibition juxtaposes pieces from Kennedy Museum’s  permanent collections including weavings, prints, paintings, ceramics and  African art. Kennedy Museum of Art, OU.

“The First American  West: Frontier and Freedom in Athens County.” This hands-on exhibit examines  the extraordinary journey of the early settlers to southeast Ohio. Athens  County Historical Society & Museum, North Court Street, Athens.

The Ridges: Remodeled  and Restored Selection of Architectural Drawings from 1923-1951. Kennedy  Museum, OU. Through Aug. 15.

•  Art installation “Buttress,” by DeWitt Godfrey. Through May 2011 at the Kennedy  Museum of Art, The Ridges, OU.

Quilting Traditions:  The Art of the Amish. Exhibition of traditional Amish quilts from the private  collection of Tom and Marsha French. Dairy Barn Arts Center’s Sauber Gallery,  Athens. Through Sept. 26.

The challenging  world of artist Harvey Breverman, which offers a wealth of unpredictable and  captivating imagery, will be featured at Ohio University’s Kennedy Museum of  Art through Jan. 16, 2011.

Exhibit featuring  the work of Kenneth Taylor at ARTS/West. The exhibit runs through Aug. 9.

Heroes, monsters and  far-away worlds are the featured subjects at the debut art show by newly  discovered artist, Athens High School sensation Mary Fay. Colorful mixed-media  works. Through Aug. 20 at O’Betty’s Red Hot, 15 W. State St., Athens.

"Wool  & Wood." Original basketry inspired by nature and American Indian  techniques. Through August. Spinning Turtle Yarn & Fiber Arts, 49 W.  Washington St, Nelsonville.

• “Spring Mix” by Elizabeth Brown, new mixed  media, graphite, acrylic and watercolors. “Something Weird This Way Comes,” new  ceramics from the witty mind of Doug Green. Plus the ninth annual Glazey Daze  artist studio clearance sale. Through Aug. 25 at Starbrick Cooperative Gallery.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Supper: Weekly free supper  sponsored by UCM: Center for Spiritual Growth and Social Justice. 5:30 p.m. at  UCM, 18 N. College St. Open to everyone, no questions asked. 593-7301.  (Volunteers are needed, and donations are welcome with advance notice.)

Free Food: The Nelsonville  Community Center provides a free breakfast to anyone under 18 Monday through  Friday at 9 p.m.

Identity  Theft Workshop:  With Carolyn Richardson, Ph.D. 6:30 p.m. Athens  Public Library.

Athens County Fair: Runs through  Saturday at the Athens County Fairgrounds. Go to http://www.athenscofair.org for  information and full schedule.

Lace  Up For Kids: At The Plains Elementary School from 9 a.m.  to noon. The result of a 12-year partnership with Wendy's and Power 105, Lace  Up For Kids provides sneakers more than 200 deserving school children every  year. At the event on Thursday, hundreds of local school-age children will  arrive at The Plains Elementary to find the perfect pair of shoes for school.


Friday

MUSIC:

• Bruce Dalzell, Laurie Rose Griffith and Peter Mealy, and the Princes of  Hollywood. 9 p.m. Donkey Coffee.

• Steve Zarate  will play instrumental music at Rhapsody  Restaurant in Nelsonville. 6:30-9:30 p.m.

• Leah Nairn  plays from 9-10:30 p.m. in OU Baker Center’s Front Room, as part of three weeks  of pre-college weeknight performances.

• The Spikedrivers. Casa Cantina.

•  The Lewis Brothers and Mason Reed. Jackie O’s Public House.

•  Rhythm on the River in Pomeroy features Davina & the Vagabonds. Riverfront  Amphitheatere.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Friday Night Supper  for the Hungry: A sit-down nutritional meal for the hungry and homeless is provided by  community organizations and churches who volunteer. 5:30 p.m. every Friday. For  info call Good Works at 594-3339.

Trimble Township  Farmers Market: Fridays  from 4-6 p.m. through Oct. 29. Across from the Kroger store in Trimble. New  vendors welcome. For info email lestercfi@frognet.net. Community Food Initiatives.

Free Food: The Nelsonville  Community Center has a free lunch open to the public every Friday from noon to  1 p.m.

Bloodmobile: 10  a.m. to 4 p.m. at O’Bleness Hospital. Call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make  an appointment. Type O negative is always needed, especially in summer.

Community  Pool Party: 8-10 p.m. at the Nelsonville City Pool.  Free. Limited to the first 500 people. Children 12 and younger must have an  adult chaperone at the pool. Sponsored by Athens County Job & Family  Services and the Nelsonville Community Center.


Saturday

MUSIC:

•  Belly-dancing and music. Every Saturday. Salaam Restaurant.

• Dale Kulchar  will play the dinner hours at Cutler’s Restaurant in the Ohio University Inn,  starting at 6 p.m.

• Jones for  Revival. Jackie O’s Public  House.

• Cory Love and Anne Wilson, and Dawn Parker. 9 p.m., Donkey Coffee.

• The  Ridgetop Music Fest takes place at the Vinton Count Airport. Sponsored by the  Vinton County Pilots and Boosters Association, it features local and area solo  performers and groups, as well as open stage entrants. In addition,  mini-tractor pulls start at 5 p.m. and will continue into the evening. The  music also starts at 5 and includes bluegrass, country, southern rock, gospel,  and more. Earlier in the day, at 2 p.m., lunch-type foods will be sold from the  shelterhouse and airplane rides will begin and continue during the event for  those wanting an early evening ride. At 5 p.m., the menu will switch to dinner.  The Vinton County Airport is located about six miles north of McArthur, just  off Ohio Rt. 93 on Airport Road. • The Blues Cowboys with Linda Dachtyl. 8 p.m. at Uncle Buck’s Riding  Stable and Dance Barn.

• Free early show (6:30 p.m.) at the Casa  Cantina featuring The Wailin' Elroys

• Anna & The Annadroids presents an  Electro-Sexual evening with Anna & The Annadroids, DJ Kenny'Lectro &  Gendala Kelli Anna. Casa Cantina.

• The Pink Barrettes with Ali Zjana. The  Union.

• Chicago Blues Jam with Bob Margolin, Bob  Stroger, Mojo Buford and Kenny Smith. 8 p.m. at the Fur Peace Station Concert  Hall, Meigs County. The show is sold out, though you can check in at the Fur  Peace Ranch office to be placed on a waiting list should tickets become  available. 740-992-6228.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Athens Farmers  Market: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Every Saturday and Wednesday on East State Street at the  Market on State (former University Mall). 132 W. State St., Athens.

Atlatl  Contests: The Ohio Atlatl Association and the Vietnam  Veterans of America Chapter 100 are holding their 11th annual Atlatl  Contest Saturday and Sunday at the Albany Riding Club, corner of Ohio Rts. 681  and 32. The atlatl is an ancient hunting system more than 30,000 years old.  Saturday’s competition starts at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s at 11 a.m.

Garden Feast: 6-8 pm at the American Legion Post 21, 520 W. Union St., Athens.  Dinner provided by the Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion.

Hawaiian  Luau: Annual event held by Burr Oak State Park and  Friends of Burr Oak. 1 p.m. at the main beach area. Activities include boat  rides, games and music. Beginning at 3 p.m., food will be provided while  supplies last. No charge.

Produce  Giveaway: The Friends and Neighbors Community Choice  Food Center will be handing out free produce such as peaches, apples,  cucumbers, zucchini, cauliflower, yellow squash and cabbage in the Athens  County Job and Family Services County Home parking lot beginning at 10 a.m. Individuals and families who are at or  below 200 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible to receive free  produce. Area residents who do not know if they are eligible will be able to  check to see if they meet the guidelines at the giveaway. Also, individuals and families can  receive the free produce even if they have received a food box from a local  food pantry recently. The  program will last until 1 p.m., or while supplies last. The Athens County Job  and Family Services County Home is located on Ohio Rt. 13, between Athens and  Chauncey and next to the Athens County Dog Shelter.


Monday

MUSIC:

MISCELLANEOUS:

Free Clinic: The OU-COM Community  Service Programs provides free health services for low-income adults, ages  18-64, who are without health insurance. 8-11:30 a.m. in Parks Hall, OU. Call  1-800-844-2654 or 593-2432 to see if you qualify and to make an appointment.

Free Lunch: Every Monday at the  First United Methodist Church, 2 S. College St., Athens. Noon to 1 p.m. Free  and open to all, no questions asked.

Food  Event: Community Food Initiatives will host a  “Jamin’ Jelly Making” Workshop. 7 p.m. at ACEnet, 94 Columbus Rd, Athens. Lisa  Trocchia will show off her fruit preservation skills and teach how to make  jams, jellies and preserves. For info: cficommunitygardens@frognet.net or 740-593-5971.

Childhood  Immunizations: Every Tuesday from 1-5:30 p.m. in the ground floor of Parks Hall, OU. OU-COM  Community Service Programs’ Childhood Immunization Program. Free to all area  children from birth through 18. Bring your child’s previous shot records.

Spoken Word Open  Stage: “Designated  Space.” Every Tuesday, 9-11 p.m., at Donkey Coffee.

Community Meal: The Athens Church of  Christ, 785 W. Union St., Athens; a free community meal every Tuesday from  5:30-6:30 p.m. Everyone welcome.
