David James Jacoby, Ph.D., 72, of Athens, died unexpectedly, Friday July 23, 2010 at his home. Born September 1, 1937 in Mansfield, he was the son of the late Edwin Bergin and Mary Margaret Miller Jacoby.

Dr. Jacoby was a retired Ohio University Professor in the Physical Education and Sport Science Department. He was a former Assistant Dean of the College of Health and Human Services. He was elected Professor of the Year at Ohio University by the students of the university and received this award three different years. He also has an honor award at Ohio University, the Dr. David J. Jacoby Award, given to a student of physical education for outstanding athletic abilities.

He was a graduate of Mansfield Senior High School in 1955. He received his B.S in Physical Education, Master Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and his Ph.D. in Education all from Ohio University.

He was a resident of Athens for over fifty years. He was baptized at the Church of the Brethren in Mansfield and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Athens. He was a member and past president of the Ohio Association of Health and Physical Education, and also a member of AMVETS Post 76, Athens and the NRA.

Dr. Jacoby is survived by his best friend and partner, Jeanne Jacoby Barton of Columbus; a son, Matthew James Jacoby of Columbus; two daughters- Rene Jacoby Lotspeich and her husband, Karl Lotspeich of Winterhaven, Florida and Jennifer Jacoby Kuhn and her husband, Robert Kuhn of Columbus; a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Lotspeich and a grandson, Kendall Lotspeich; nieces and nephews- Rebecca Walters, Deborah Fowler, Michael Thorpe and great and great, great nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he is preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Thorpe and two brothers, Edward Baines Jacoby and Robert Jacoby.

A memorial service will be held at the Ohio University Golf Course, 9th Green, Monday, August 2nd at 1:00PM. Calling hours will not be observed.
