Local poverty to be featured on Sunday's "Dateline NBC" show

The NBC News television program “Dateline NBC” will feature Athens County in a program that will be broadcast this Sunday at 7 p.m.

The program will look at poverty in America and will focus on people struggling to make ends meet in Athens County and southern Ohio. Athens County Job and Family Services representatives were contacted by Dateline NBC producers about the program, but do not know what will be shown in the July 25 broadcast.

Dateline NBC Reporter Ann Curry traveled to Athens County for the story, and said in an article posted on Mediabistro.com that the interviews she did here reminded her of some of her global reporting.

“This reporting is more like my experiences covering third world countries than any other I have ever done in America,” Curry said in the article. The article is posted at Ann Curry Reports on ‘Friends & Neighbors’ - mediabistro.com: TVNewser In a news release, Athens County Job and Family Services expressed satisfaction that the national news program looked at the hardships that people face living in poverty today. “We hope that this program will help more people gain a better understanding of America’s poor and the struggles they face just to meet their basic needs of food and shelter,” the release said.
