Core-drilling first, sheriff's HQ next

By Athens NEWS Staff

The Athens County Sheriff's Office is looking to get a new headquarters within the next couple years, and construction is slated to begin as soon as an appropriate location is selected, Athens County Commissioner Lenny Eliason confirmed Tuesday.

The county is currently conducting soil-boring tests on a potential site for the headquarters at a location on a side road just north of the junction of state Rt. 550 and U.S. Rt. 33.

"We're doing a soil-boring test to determine what the cost of building on that property would be," Eliason said. "... There's mines underneath, and with a mine underneath you may have to fill it depending on the location. That raises the cost of building."

Eliason said it would not be a wise investment to purchase that property without the testing, and then find out later that the county can't build on it.

"Our plan is that we are going to move the sheriff (Pat Kelly) when we find a feasible location that we can build on, that meets his requirements, and that we can afford," he said. "We are looking at, probably, 2011 or 2012."

He said construction may begin in 2010 depending on how soon a location is selected, although construction probably will begin in 2011.

"We have to make sure our operating budget is in place for 2011 "“ that we're not going to have any drastic cuts from the state in the middle of this year," Eliason said.

He said that currently no other sites are being considered, but the county had looked at several others previously that were determined to not be financially feasible.

"Right now that's the only site we're exploring," he said.

The county intends to finance construction of the new sheriff's headquarters by selling and refinancing bonds, county Commissioner Lenny Eliason said Wednesday. He didn't have an estimate for how much the project will cost.

If the facility doesn't get built until 2012 or later, Athens County Sheriff Kelly may not get to enjoy it for very long, or at all. His term of office is up for re-election in 2012.
