Harry Fitzgerald Thomas, 79, of Nelsonville, died Sunday morning, December 20, 2009 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. Born June 5, 1930 in Winnebago, Nebraska, he was the son of the late Edna Thomas.
Harry was a foster grandparent. He lectured on the Appalachian Trail and Native American Culture & Life. He was considered a legend on the Appalachian Trail and lived on the trail for over 23 years. He had also operated a youth hostel in Maryland near the Appalachian Trail. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Smith Thomas; a son, Noel (Cathy) Day of Tucson, Ariz.; a grandchild, Hunter Day; two sisters- Gracia Peeples of Sioux City, Iowa and Marjorie Fountain of South Bend, Indiana; a sister in law, Darlene Smith of Athens; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and members of the Winnebago Tribe.
Harry is preceded in death by an infant son, Edward Thomas and a brother, Edward Masquat.
Cremation will take place and his cremains will be interred in the Winnebago Tribal Lands in Nebraska. Arrangements are with Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.
