The Obama Administration has appointed a local lawyer and horse-breeder to USDA Farm Service Agency's State Executive Committee.
John Lavelle owns a family livestock farm in addition to the law firm, Lavelle & Associates located in Athens, Ohio. He served as special counsel to five Ohio attorney generals.
Lavelle was among several appointments announced by U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, in a news release.
Also appointed was Tony Logan as the USDA's Ohio state director of rural development. Logan previously served as chief legal counsel and wind policy coordinator for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. From 1987 to 1990, Logan served as assistant director and general counsel in the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
"This is a proud day for Ohio," Brown said in a prepared release. "The appointees represent a diverse agricultural background and each will serve Ohio, and our nation, with distinction. They all are committed to strengthening Ohio agriculture and to ensuring that our rural areas are prosperous for years to come."
Brown chairs the U.S. Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Hunger, Nutrition, and Family Farms. He is the first Ohioan in more than 40 years to serve on the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee.
